Tyrone / CHARLTON of Galbally, Dromore

My G2-GM was Ann CHARLTON (c1811-1905) from Galbally, Dromore, Co. Tyrone.

We believe (from her death certificate) that her parents were James CHARLTON and Ann WILSON.

Ann married John GRAHAM c1831 in Dromore, and the family came to Australia in 1861.

Ann had a nephew, James RITCHIE (1835-1922) who came from Dromore. His parents (according to his DC) were William RITCHIE (c1811-1893) and Matilda CHARLTON (c1813-1873). This family came to Australia in 1863.

The GRAHAM and RITCHIE families settled on farms only a couple of miles apart.

The circumstantial evidence suggests Ann and Matilda were sisters, thus making James RITCHIE Ann’s nephew.

However, Matilda’s DC gives her parents as James CHARLTON and Mary, surname unknown, rather than James and Ann (nee WILSON).

It is possible that (a) Ann (Wilson) CHARLTON died c1811, and James remarried, to Mary, or (b) one or both of the DCs has the parentage wrong.

So – does anyone have any information on a family from Dromore with James CHARLTON the father, and daughters Ann (b. c1811) and Matilda (b. c1813)?

Just going through his WWI attestation papers again, and there is a mention that he "completed service" in the RAM Corps. No dates given. So it's all fitting together.

Thanks lizdb, that fills in his father's name.

How did you access the marriage information to that level, if I may ask?

It's possible that Cantridge is a mis-spelled Cambridge, although the mis-spelling must be at least one document generation ago as the one I'm looking at is a clearly-typewritten Cantridge. It does appear in the "alternate or mis-spelled names" list on FreeBMD against Cambridge, so I think this is starting to look like the most likely explanation.

In relation to Ancestry family trees, there are a number there with Fred included. They generally agree on his death and marriage, but his birth is a bit of a lottery, hence my appeal here.

Cambridgeshire / Frederick George WYNTER (c1879-1925)

I am trying to locate the birth of Frederick George WYNTER, a WWI soldier.

He and his family left England in August 1914 for Australia. He subsequently (on 27 Jul 1915) enlisted in the AIF, served on the Western Front, and returned to Australia in 1919. He died (of a war-related condition) on 16 Nov 1925 in Sydney.

In his service dossier, he gives his age at enlistment as 35y 11m, and his place of birth as Cantridge, Cambridgeshire. That points to a birth around Aug 1879.

He married Emma Jane (known as Jennie) DAUNTON in the Parish of Edmonton, Middlesex on 4 Apr 1904. Children were Phillip (c1908), Iris (c1912), Mary (c1915) and Phyllis (aft 1918).

He is listed in the 1911 Census, living at 3 Hinton Rd, Edmonton with Emma and Phillip. His birthplace in the Census is given as Histon, Cambridgeshire, which my map shows is about 5m NW of the centre of Cambridge.

My problems are (1) where in Cambridgeshire is Cantridge, (2) when was Fred born, and who were his parents, and (3) was he born in Cantridge or Histon?

I can't find an obvious match for his birth in FreeBMD. I have looked under both WYNTER and WINTER (the family is listed under WINTER in the 1911 Census, and their 1914 voyage to Australia).

Any hints appreciated.

London and Middlesex / WELLS and HOLLOWAY families of Westminster
« on: Saturday 17 December 11 07:14 GMT (UK)  »
My grandmother's brother, John WELLS (Private, AIF) married Doris Maud HOLLOWAY at St Georges Hanover Square in 1917. John was killed at Ypres later that year, without seeing his son John L WELLS, b. late 1917.

While John L WELLS is quite likely dead by now, I believe he had a daughter Barbara who married a BROOKS or BROOKES, and lived in Rampayne St Westminster.

I would love to make contact with descendants of John and Doris. A photo of them at, or shortly after, their wedding is attached.

I have traced Doris and her HOLLOWAYs via the censuses, and I believe she was descended as follows:

Doris Maud HOLLOWAY - b. c1893 in Newman St, Westminster.

Parents - Walter Russell HOLLOWAY (b. c1871 St Martin in the Fields) and Mary Elizabeth.

Grandparents - George Frederick HOLLOWAY (b. c1839 St Martin in the Fields) and Angelina NICHOLS.

Great-grandparents - George HOLLOWAY (b. c1800) and Elizabeth.

If anyone is connected to either of these families, I'd love to hear from you.

Passenger list for Neptune 1939 (found at http://www.rootschat.com/history/hastings/content/view/90/30/  ) lists Thomas as coming out with a Mary Goodsell.  All the kids seem correct as listed in this thread though.

This confusion is caused by the slightly different way the family has been recorded in the shipping list. Normally parents are listed with the father first, but in Mary's case she has been recorded as the "daughter of Eleanor Goodsell and John, her husband". All quite correct as far as it goes, except they didn't record the fact that John's surname was PUXTED (or PUXTY).

Again, if you look in the LDS Family Search database for 'Thomas Boxsell' - you'll find one who was married to Mary Goodsell.  It says her mother was 'Eleanor' and father 'John Goodsell'. (same christian names for the parents of Mary Puxted).

This marriage entry also contains the dreaded words "Record submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church." It is NOT an extract from a PR, but only someone else's research. Maybe this researcher was also confused by the shipping entry? Whatever the reason, the information is wrong. (At the risk of upsetting any LDS members reading this, I contend that the LDS made a HUGE mistake when they opened up the IGI to user submissions. The IGI is no longer the authoratative source it once was.)

Have you seen my website at www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nswgdhs/pioneers.htm? You'll find some more information there. Please contact me directly (link on the website), so we can compare notes, particularly about your part of the BOXSELL tree.
