Warwickshire / Re: Missing from 1911 Census?

Hi Milliepede,

His son William Joseph Lowe was baptised 21 May 1914, birthplace Coleshill. (1914, Jul-Aug-Sep, Meriden Warwickshire, Eden, 6d, 1274)

His son George Arthur Smith was baptised 19 Jun 1916, birthplace Bentley. (1916, Jul-Aug-Sep, Atherstone Warwickshire, Eden, 6d, 1181)

So sometime between these two dates, he never went back to using Dennis Levi Lowe. I have searched the newspapers on various occasions with little luck. He enlisted for WW1 21st May 1917 and was transferred to the reserve in 1919.

Perhaps something happened in Coleshill/Castle Bromwich but this does not explain his absence from the 1911 census.

Only one verifiable trip to jail, in 1926 for an assault on William Andrew Bartlam and his wife. Sentenced to one month hard labour in Atherstone gaol. We have long suspected more..

Kind regards,
Zak

Ultimately this thread is a carry on from an old thread here:
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=850588.0

I haven't been able to find my great-grandfather Dennis Levi Lowe (later William Levi Smith) in the 1911 census. I've always thought this was strange.

In 1901 he is living with his grandparents William and Maria Savage in Hatton. He married Kate Elizabeth Eden on 16 Sep 1911, his residence is given as Illshaw Heath (he had a child with her born out of wedlock in 1909). Kate Elizabeth Eden is in the 1911 census living in Illshaw Heath, living with her mother Catherine. On the same record there's a "William Legge", 32 (est birth 1879), born Shropshire.

Dennis was born 1883 in Beausale, Warwickshire. Any thoughts?

Given he changed his name later on, perhaps living under an alias? In prison? I think the military is unlikely.

Ok, so here’s what I have..

Edward & Ann
Edward Moore (b. 1837) marries Ann Moore (b.1835) in 1865 in Leamington Priors. A news article in 1932 (Stratford Herald) states that Edward and Ann were cousins.

All census birthplace data for Edward Moore lists Rowington, birth year 1837/38. There’s a baptism in Rowington 27 Aug 1837, father Thomas, mother Elizabeth. Edward is living with his parents in Rowington in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses.

All census birthplace data for Ann Moore lists Preston Bagot, birth year 1835/36. There’s a baptism for Ann March 1835 in Preston Bagot, father Charles, mother Sarah. The Stratford Herald interview in 1930 confirms her father was Charles and she was living with a Charles and Sarah in the 1841 census. Her father’s estimated birth year is 1791, mother’s 1811.

Ann’s parents - Charles & Sarah
There’s a baptism for a Charles Moore in Preston Bagot 17 Nov 1786, father John, mother Martha. willsy’s post reveals John’s will that mentions children Charles and Thomas. Charle’s dies 1850, burial Beaudesert.

The only marriage I have has been mentioned, March 1827 Aston, “Sarah Bradeley”. I know nothing about Sarah, other than her estimated birth year, father unknown, mother unknown. Sarah dies 1842, burial Preston Bagot.

Edward’s parents - Thomas & Elizabeth
This is where it gets interesting. When Edward is living with his parents, his father’s estimated birth year is 1811, mother’s 1812/13. Father’s birthplace is Rowington on all censuses. Mother’s is Shrewley or Hatton. There’s a baptism 16 Aug 1812 in Hatton for a “Elizabeth Joyner”, father Thomas Joyner, mother Mary Halford. There’s no marriage record that I could find, but this is what has been in my tree for years. I couldn’t find a baptism in Rowington for Thomas either, nearest I got was a baptism 24 Apr 1810 in Knowle (6 miles away), parent’s Edward and Sarah (Chadborne).

However, Charles had a brother Thomas baptised 11 Jun 1782 Preston Bagot. (There was another Thomas born 1781 but died in infancy). Married an Elizabeth Anchor in 1807 – so there’s an actual marriage cert available here. Children born of this Thomas would make then cousins with Ann. Elizabeth’s age gives a birth around 1791, so would be 46 if Edward is her son. I can’t find a baptism for Edward. They are also living in Preston Bagot not Rowington. Thomas dies 1848, Elizabeth in 1842.

Children I did find:
  • Eliza 1815
  • Thomas 1817
  • Martha 1819
  • Sarah 1821
  • Sophia 1826
  • William 1828
Nothing really matches up with this one, other than the cousin link, so I’m wary of this one.

So really none the wiser I think, although for certain we can say Edward’s parents were a Thomas and Elizabeth and for Ann, her parents were Charles and Sarah. For Charles as well, I’d be happy to say his parents were John and Martha.

Still no idea how Edward and Ann were cousins but I made a mistake with Sarah Moore (Chadborne), as I'd confused her death with that of Sarah Moore (Draper) of Rowington. Adjusted death to Jan 1834, Knowle, birth c. 1775.

Can't find anymore on the Chadbornes. One record above Sarah's marriage record at Knowle is an Elizabeth Chadborne who married "Theophilus Richards" of Birmingham on 3 Apr 1793. Thought I'd find more based on the unusual name but haven't been able to work anything back yet.

Had a look at Thomas, Edward's father; from the births and checking GRO, MMN Joyner, have found

Thomas Moore married Elizabeth Joyner 20 Jul 1835 St. Martin, Birmingham
mar wits. Robert Powell, Elizabeth Joyner

1841 in Rowington

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01trj/

and a couple of doors above is a Sarah Moore, age 60 wid. crossed out in occupation col., with another Edward Moore; might be worth looking at this Moore family too.

Hi willsy

Joyner is what I have for Edward too - I have a baptism for Elizabeth Joyner 16 Aug 1812 in Hatton. Census records indicate she was born in Shrewley. Parents are Thomas Joyner and Mary Halford (I haven't looked into these yet).

Sarah Moore would be Thomas' mum. MMN Chadbourne (or similar as mentioned below)

Awesome work BushInn.. I hadn't got as far back as Thomas M of the 1700s, I can see a marriage at Rowington for Thomas Moore and Elizabeth Lewis (of Lapworth) in 1763. Inflation calculator says £600 in 1805 is around £44,000 in today's money!

Her funeral is covered in the Stratford upon Avon Herald 26th August 1932.

Death At 97

Mrs Ann Moore, ...

Born (at Preston Bagot on March 6th, 1835), ...

... an orphan when she was 6

Adopted by friends who kept the White Horse Inn

Crowley Murder case, ... The crime was committed at Outhill, ...
... as a girl served a murderer with a beer at the White Horse Inn, Henley in Arden whilst he was fleeing from his crime

A little later Ann Moore returned to Preston Bagot, to live with a Miss Parker, of the Firs. When she married her cousin, Edward Moore, a bootmaker, ... her first years of married life were in a cottage at Holywell, Shrewley. ... three sons and one daughter born ... Later her husband set up in business in Henley, at the Red House, where the family resided for 18 years. Next they lived in the house that is now the office of the county divisional surveyor, but shortly removed to the house next door to the rectory, living there for 15 or 16 years. Finally, in 1914, they moved to No. 69, High-street. Two years later Mr Moore died at the ripe age of 83, and since then Mrs Moore has lived under the care of her son and and daughter-in-law, Mr and Mrs Frank Moore.
 ...

The Funeral.

Mourners, named and their relationship, or their name and the place they come from.

Just some small bits of the whole column (top of the page to the bottom).

Mark

Hi Mark... thanks for this. What has thrown me is that they were cousins, so I think I've also gone wrong somewhere on my family tree. If Ann and Edward were cousins, then their dads were brothers and they share the same parents? ...

Edward's father is Thomas Moore .. birthplace Rowington c. 1810... looking at Rowington PR, there's no baptism for a Thomas at that time, nearest I can find is baptism at Knowle 24 Apr 1810 (about 6 miles from Rowington).

Ann's father is Charles Moore.. birthplace Warwickshire (1841 census), assumed he was the baptism at Preston Bagot 17 Nov 1786. A 24 year age gap seems unlikely...

Raises more questions that answers.

I'm also starting to think Sarah Moore's death wasn't registered, as I can't find anything even remotely similar.

Hi everyone thanks for your thoughts so far

I have the same information as Mabel for the last two children

I am a descendant of Ann Moore (b. 1835), she lived until 1932 and was once the oldest person in Henley in Arden. The Stratford Herald interviewed her in 1930: https://www.stratford-herald.com/whats-on/history-the-day-henley-s-oldest-resident-saw-a-man-wanted-9349680/

In the article it states:

"Her father was in his 50s by the time she was born, and although she only mentioned her mother dying when she was young, and that she was orphaned at six, it seems that her father actually died when she was 15."

So this corelates nicely with 1842 burial of Sarah.

If it's helpful the article also mentions:

"Ann Moore was born at Preston Bagot on 6 March 1835; her father Charles worked at Manor Farm as an agricultural labourer. She was one of at least 11 children, not all of whom survived, and by the time she was six, she said she had been orphaned. Ann was then informally adopted by family friends who ran the White Horse Inn in Henley. She started work from a young age as a servant, waiting on the coaches that pulled up at the inn."

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for the death registration for a "Sarah Moore" (nee Bradley(?)), wife of Charles Moore of Preston Bagot. There appears to be a burial for a Sarah Moore aged 33 on the 4 Jan 1842 in Preston Bagot, which is a similar age given in the 1841 census (30). Given the small population, it's most likely this is the Sarah Moore I'm after but I'm struggling to find the death on the GRO online indexes. ???

I don't really know anything about her other than she may have married Charles at Aston in 1827, hence the maiden name of Bradley. I'd love to push this line back further but lack evidence.

If it's a help her husband Charles appears to have died in 1850, an "Eliza Carpenter" is present at the death.

Many thanks

There's a "William Eydon" baptised 11 March 1810 in Milcombe, to Robert and Mary. Milcombe is only 3 miles from Barford St. Michael (listed as birthplace in 1851 census). He also had a brother Thomas who was born in 1816. Robert (father) appears to have been an Agricultural Labourer (listed in 1851 census under his wife "Pauper, Ag Lab Widow", the same as William (as listed in the 1851 census).
