Armed Forces / Re: List of all Battle of Waterloo men - free lookup offer
« on: Saturday 19 April 25 08:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi, unfortunately, he is not included on the Waterloo roll or my roll ( which consists of 36600 men ).
I did search the Royal Hospital Chelsea records, and he is listed under the name 'Lensley'. His information is the same as your own, so I suspect you have seen the same record. Also, there is no 'Waterloo' on his record, which would indicate that he served at the battle.
Regarding the loss of his left eye, it could have been caused by ophthalmia, which was quite common back then.
I am sorry if this information is disappointing for you.
Kind regards
Ed.

To, Annette 128.
With reference to Samuel Brockley:   I have him on my roll as Samuel Bromley, which could be a corruption of Brockley.
Bromley was born in Denton, Lancashire and enlisted into the Royal Artillery on 21st April 1799, aged 18. His service papers state that he was promoted to Bombardier in June 1805 and Serjeant in Nov 1813. Bromley was discharged to a pension of 1s 10d per day at Woolwich on 30th June 1820.
Now this is where it gets interesting - I have him married to 'Elizabeth Davis' in 1818 at Pontefract ( the same as your information ). The 1851 census gives Bromley living at Howards Lane, Haughton, Lancashire, with his wife and 9 members of his family.  Although some of the data does not tie up with your own, it is another possibility to follow.
My main concern with Bromley is there is no reference to Waterloo on his service papers, where as Brockley is definitely shown on the Waterloo roll.
REF for Bromley is WO97/1215/240

HI Helen, No man named 'Rodway' on the Waterloo roll.
There are seven men with the name 'Bingham' on the roll - I have data on six of the men, but alas none of them were from Gloucestershire I'm afraid. The seventh man - all I have is that he was Assistant Surgeon with the Royal Artillery and died in Ireland on 20th Jan 1825.

I am afraid he did not serve at Waterloo  - so I have no information on him.

Hi, Steve,  'John Filer' is not on my Waterloo Roll - I have also checked the Royal Mint Roll, alas, he is not on that either.  This is not conclusive evidence, as there are many omissions from the Roll ( hundreds in fact ). There is a possibility that he was discharged before Waterloo.  The only suggestion I can give is to check the muster lists. I am not aware if the 4th Foot's musters are available on line. 'Ancestry' I believe have musters available, but I am not sure if they hold the 4th foot.  If not then it would mean a visit to the Public Records Office at KEW.

Edd.

Hi,
There is only one man with the name 'joseph Bush' on the Waterloo Roll: he served with the 4th foot   in Captain Craig's company.  Sadly this is the only information I have on him.  There does not seem to be any records of him in the National Archives records. You might get further info from the muster lists.

Hi Alan,
He is not listed on my Waterloo roll, ( probably too young at the time ).
After searching the National Archives - I have found him.  His name is recorded as 'Redmond' and he served with the 54th Foot and the 1st Life guards from 1822 - 1826. Redmond was discharged in 1826, aged 26. His service was brief, which would indicate a severe illness or accident. He must have been a very tall man for the the time, as the Life Guards recruited men of 6ft tall on average.
His service documents are held at the National Archives:  WO 97/675/51

Hi, if you give me your ancestor's name - I will check my database to see if his name comes up.
