Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Thomas Cotton - Shepshed

Thomas and Ann of Shepshed baptised their children as "Particular Baptist" (the mind boggles!)

Other children:
John (April 1808)
William (1809)

Any help?

Thank you Annie. I’ve had a look and found this explanation of what a particular Baptist was

The General Baptists held that God allows an individual to choose whether to live a virtuous and holy life, repenting of sins, and so earn salvation. Thus the General Baptists held that salvation was open to all, while the Particular or Strict Baptists held that it was restricted to the “Elect”.

Thanks for finding the other children’s names out they will be most helpful

Give Thomas jnr seems to be a farmer of a substantial holding, I would think his father is more likely to also be a farmer rather than undertake "farm work" (which is more of an ag lab to me?)

ie points to Thomas and Ann

I think you may be correct because in 1851 Thomas & Mary re listed as “farmers of 137 acres with 4 labourers and 1 lad.   By 1861 they are farming 140 acres

Hi
There is one for 1809 in Shepshed
21 Dec 1809 Thomas Cotton parents Thomas  Ann
Denomination Baptist

Bunnygirl

Thomas and Ann appear to be on 1841 - both aged 55, living on Sullington [?] Road. He's a farmer and they have  two servants

Thank you for that Sullington Road is still in Shepshed and is in fact one of the oldest roads in the town.  I will look on that census.

According to the 1835 marriage license record Thomas was "Thomas jnr" and "Thomas the younger".

His occupation is Farmer. His age is "21 years and upwards".

A bit late but there's a Feb 1817 baptism in Shepshed for a Thomas Cotton to parents Thomas and Jane Cotton. Father's occupation looks something like Farm Work.

Thank you it’s quite tricky as there seems to be more than one cotton family in Shepshed at time and for many generations after.  We can say that his father was Thomas Cotton.

I’m struggling to find the parents of Thomas Cotton born in Shepshed Leics between 1807/1811.  He married Mary Burgess who was born in Whitwick in 1815. They married c1835 Any help most appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to check for me it’s very much appreciated.  I’ve tried reaching out to other members of the family to see if anyone has any ideas.  I have discovered my great grandfather died in Carlton Hayes hospital in Narborough I’ve even looked there but haven’t had any luck.

I can't find any notices in the newspapers, but there are two which might be of interest.

There is an article about Whitwick Colliery in the Leicester Evening Mail, on 16th June 1962, about miners willing to contribute 10 cwts. of their concessionary coal to the pool supplying retired miners and widows.
One of the names mentioned is Mr. Everard Gent (50 years service).

In 1939, he was a colliery hewer at 91 Brook Street in Shepshed.
In 1921, they were in Whitwick as Ghent. Everard, an out of work miner, is translated incorrectly as Edward, so I have sent an error message.

In the Leicester Evening Mail, on 3rd October 1940, it mentions Everard Gent (Jnr.?) of Brook Street, Shepshed, who escaped injury as a pillion passenger when the rider, Edward Ash, rode into a dyke.

Probate following Everard's death, on 9th October 1962, gives his address as 25 McCarthy Road, Shepshed.
That of Ethel, on 9th May 1963, is the same address.

David

Thank you for that David fascinating

Now that is interesting I will look into the Leicester idea.    I have even checked with Shepshed Cemetery direct and they’ve checked the actual records book just in case they were missed when put online.  Thanks for your help.
