Perthshire / Why am I so baffled by Lillias Halley’s life?
« on: Thursday 09 October 25 12:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks
I am looking for any information about Lillias Halley. Specifically about her birth details and life choices and challenges….
I have been researching this side of my family for many years and yesterday I had some major breakthroughs.

Lillias is my 3x great grandmother. According to the 1891 census she was born 1850 in Hamilton, Lanark. Her death certificate correlates with her birth being 1850.

Lillias had, as far as I can find four children who were all illegitimate. It would appear that Lillias never raised any of these children…is this unique?

Mary Bain was born 1866 in Auchterarder. Reputed father was James Bain.
Mary was brought up by the Gorrham family…..I have census records for 1871, 1881 and 1891. Mary is recorded as “adopted daughter”.
Mary married Alexander Smith in 1894 and her sister Lily was a witness.

Peter Halley was born 23 March 1872 • Trinity Gask,Perth. He was born in Roman Cottage…this is where Lillias was recorded in the 1861 census working as a servant.
Peter died at Trinity Gask in 1939. Never married.

Lillias Ballingall Halley born 1873 Madderty, Perth. Died 29 October 1898  Falkirk. Her brother in law ( Alexander Smith) present at death. Lillias is living with her sister, Mary with the Gorrham family.

James Halley born 6 August 1875  Madderty Perth. Died 29 September 1954 Falkirk. James married Barbara Ann Farquhar.

Lillias died on 31 August 1934 and to my great surprise and gladness…….she was living with her son James in Falkirk. She died in the Larbet asylum but her usual address was James’s address too.

Cheers
