The Lighter Side / Re: The worst surnames to search for?
« on: Thursday 04 May 06 12:40 BST (UK)  »
My worst is Harrison, especially in Durham where they came from, Im sure every coal miner in Durham was a Harrison.  the problem is who is related to who.

And every Harrison is renamed after another harrison, my ggrandfather and ggrandmother decided to name all their children after her brothers and sisters and that hasnt helped although its nearly sorted now.

Its like the needle got stuck on the record.

The Lighter Side / Re: Family rumours have they turned out to be true?

What an interesting lot on here!  well mines pretty boring.

Dad was told as a child that his grandfather was a came from Cornwall, so thats where we started looking it turned out that a story had gone round the family for years and in fact dads grandfather didnt come from Cornwall he came from Durham, was born and bred there.

I was told that cos I was dark my grandmother was spanish, that turned out not true as she was born and bred in Bishop Auckland Durham.

The only story that is true is that nan told all of the family that her eldest daughter was her own but she was the only child with ginger hair when all the family were dark haired, it wasnt until the daughter died that we find out that she was a half sister.  And the way gran use to go on about women having children out of wedlock, the cheek of it.  Dad always said she wasnt a Harrison.

The oldest member of one of my ancestors was 50 when she had her last child, and she had 15 children!

We must remember folks there was no tv then.

Hi Geoff

Sorry I havent been in touch sooner, not been very well.

There is loads of Harrisons far too many to be honest, but there is one particular Harrison Im looking for, and that is the death of Anthony Harrison (my ggrandfather) b1851/1852 in Tanfield, Durham.  I know he was still alive in 1901.  his wife was Mary and they lived in 1901 at 1 oakeys cottages as did most of the Harrisons.  that is all the information I have on Anthony.

Tanya, sent me a site on Ancestory of the index to look through so hopefully I should find him on that, but the past few days just havent felt up to it.

Please dont put yourself out for me, as I dont like really asking people to look for things as I think that is part of the fun.

Best Wishes

Yvonne

Hi Steve

Thanks for the reply, yes it sounds like a some kind of foreman doesnt it, there is 1 or 2 ancestors of mine were overseers.

When you read about the miners in them days, the way they worked and lived it must of been a hard life and most of my Harrisons had anything between 5 and 15 children including dad who is one of 14.  Dad tells me stories of life when he was young and told me as soon as you turned 14 that was it off down the mines, no ifs and buts you had to go as you were living in cottages run by the mines.  I have one ancestor who was 9 in the mine.  We dont know where born in this day and age.

Many thanks

Hi Tanja

Thanks for the information I will have a look at that.  I wish dad had never started this family tree, mums side has been great but the Harrisons drive me potty.

Much appreciated

Durham / Where or when did he die?
« on: Thursday 27 April 06 18:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Ive searched everything and everywhere for my ggrandfathers death, he was still alive in 1901 in Tanfield Durham but can't find what year he died.  He was born in 1851/52.  My dad said he doesnt remember ever seeing his grandfather and dad was born 1919.  Great grandfather was called Anthony Harrison.  is there any way I could find his death or will have to wait until the census after 1901 are released.
