Family History Beginners Board / Re: Sam Whincup mentioned in dispatches

Thank you Jim1 that is really interesting. It's such a shame that the war records were burnt. I did look at the Gazette but when I tried to filter the results by adding Sam Whincup it returned 0 results. Now that I know some dates I will revisit this. The 1921 census shows he was unemployed and is wife died in 1925 in the Becket Street Union Workhouse and is buried in a guinea grave. His only son was killed in WW2. There's no justice.

Family History Beginners Board / Sam Whincup mentioned in dispatches

Hi everyone
I seem to have hit a brick wall with my ancestor Sam Whincup b1895. His parents were Samuel Whincup and Catherine Woodward. He served in the West Yorkshire regiment 10 bn with some distinction. He is mentioned on the Imperial War Museum website which gives some details of his medals including a military medal and bar and that he was also mentioned in dispatches (see https://livesofthefirstworldwar.iwm.org.uk/lifestory/4718417 )
Unfortunately I can't find anything more about his service other than a small amount on the fold3 site.
Can anyone help.

Thankyou for your help. I've been using the advanced search on the BNA and it didn't produce any results. Using the menu down the left hand side is much better and gives results. I will go back through some of my past searches to see what I can find.

Family History Beginners Board / She fell off a step ladder

Hi everyone

I'm researching an ancestor named Zellah Finch nee Betteridge b1845 d1909. I've downloaded a death cert and she died by senile decay accelerated by a fall from a step ladder in her son's house in Brassington Derbyshire. It says an inquest was held. There is a downloadable spreadsheet that provides an index for the articles in the Derbyshire Times from 1900 to 1919 and shows that the inquest was reported on 06/03/1909 Page 8. I've searched the British Newspaper Archive using all the search terms I can think of and although the Archive includes the Derbyshire Times I don't get any hits. Is there a knack to using this archive - can anyone help.

Hello all - I'm researching my family and have been looking at Robert Wilkinson Boyes born abt 1857. I've downloaded his death certificate (see attached) and I am struggling with some of the causes of death. I believe it is chronic something then possibly pericarditis and finally syncope (fainting) If anyone has any knowledge of what the illness might have been I would be very grateful.

Thank you for the many replies - I think the local name of Norristhorpe, Liversedge sounds about right. Hope everyone has a Happy Christmas.

Hi Everyone
I'm researching my family in particular the Kitchingman branch and I've come across a Joseph Kitchingman baptised at St Peter's church in Birstall West Yorkshire. He was the son of Thomas and Sarah Wilson married in the same church on 12 Feb 1782. Thomas was born in 1761 in Mirfield. The baptism record shows the place they lived as "Dog House" (see attached) I've tried looking at old OS maps and I've been in touch with the Bagshaw Museum in Birstall but no one has heard of it. Can anyone help.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Born at Sea
« on: Monday 30 October 23 08:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone - I'm researching my family's history and in particular the family of Mary Jones seaman's widow. I'm having trouble with the where born column of the 1851 census. I can make out that her daughter Hannah Laker was born at sea on board the Dictator 64 guns but I cannot read the rest of the family. Can anyone help. Could anyone explain why Mary was on board what was clearly a warship when she gave birth to Hannah. I could sort of understand if they were in port but it says at sea.
