As you say Ann..very inconsiderate. Good luck in finding your missing mariners.  marzipan

I also have a seaman ancestor who seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. I wonder if you can give me some help?
His name is Samuel Connis  born in Glasgow on 1st March 1854.
He was a stoker in the Royal Navy.  I have a record of ships he sailed on from 1875 until the last one, Lord Warden in May 1882. I got this from the Nat.Archives.official no.93503.
The only record I can find after this was his son's birth cert. in 1887 which says he is a merchant seaman. He went to sea after this and was never heard from again. I cant find any record of his death, would there have been a record if he had jumped ship? His family never knew what became of him. Hoping some one can help me with this as it has been a brick wall for me for years now.  marzipan

Thanks for that carlibar,   your description of James seems familiar somehow, I have a vague memory of my Mum giving me a similar description. That was sad that they lost their only son. Would you have any idea when he died or when they died?
Are you still in touch with the Murphy's? I have some info on Mary Murphy nee Finlay who came from Newtonard, Ireland. This would have been Minnies Mother. Can you tell me anymore about Minnie ? What she was like etc. or any photos? I have one photo of my Granny, Mary Murphy nee Finlay, she would have died before you were born, !932 in Duke st hospital.  Did Minnie ever mention that she had a young sister, 12 yrs younger? name of Maimie.  This was my Mum.   cheers marzipan

Hello again Carlibar, thrilled to hear from you. I live just south of Adelaide & also enjoying lovely weather today.  The only info. I have of Minnie is what I managed to get from Scotlands people and from what I remember my Mum telling me. Minnie was born in Bridgeton on April 1901. Willie visited my Mum soon after I was born 1945 and I think that was the last time she saw him. The other brother James and Minnie she never saw after her mother died in 1932. I have always been curious to find out more of this side of the family, while my Mum was alive I used to ask her to try and find them but never did. My Mum was brought up as an only child and the only record I have found was in 1921 when Minnie was 18yrs old, James 19 and William 22 and my Mum was 6yrs... living at Dean st Glasgow. Also found the marraige cert. when Minnie married J.E.B. in1929. Not a lot of info, Though I have some info on Mary Murphy's family from Ireland. Wonder if the obnoxious brother was James??? Any more info you can give me would be much appreciated, especially of the Murphy clan or Minnie. Out now to a BBQ but hope to hear from you soon again marzipan

Hi Lynda C and Mr.Migky,  Just found your posts. I have been in touch with you Lynda about my Connis's. I think the problem in finding them is the varients in the name spelling: I have them under Coneys, Cannis, Conniss,Conis,Cunnis and my Grandfather Samuel Connis.  ::)
Mr.MIGKY could you please tell me more about the Connis's you found. I am hoping to find a marriage cert. for my GGGrandparents Samuel Coneys b.1821 Galway and Jane Best b1825 Derry. I dont Know if they were married in Ire. I have them on Glasgow census 1851....then St. Lukes, London with family 1861....then back to Glasgow with 8 children, including my GGrandfather on the 1871 census. Someone told me Thomas Coneys came to Ire. with Cromwell and was given a piece of land in leiu of wages in Connemara, his grandson was my Samuel Coneys {GGGrandfather}but after telling me this I was'nt able to connect with them again and being fairly new to  geneaology have no idea how they got this info. Apparantly  there are Coneys's still living in Clifden, Galway. My GGrandfather Samuel Connis was born in Glasgow 1854 and my Grandfather also Samuel Connis was born in Paisley, Scotland in 1884. If any of you can help me with these Connis's I would be truly grateful........Marzipan  :)   :)

Thanks Ann for your help, I,m trying to convince my husband how nice it would be to have a holiday home but he knows I would be trailing around graveyards and registry offices! I will give Scotlands people a go & see if I can find something for James and William Murphy, they are pretty common names so I imagine there will be hundreds of them. Thanks for your help Ann,much appreciated. Marzipan

Hi Ann,

Thankyou so much for your help. I will certainly try Scotlands People as I am also looking for Minnies brothers James and William R. Murphy and I'm pretty sure they all lived in Barrhead.
Can you get records from Park Circus online? I am in Australia so a visit there would be out of the question. Thanks again for your help, much appreciated. Marzipan
