John Perry Neate was born in Devizes in 1827. The ‘Perry’ appears to be from his mother’s maiden name; he was only recorded as John Neate in records before 1863, but almost always John Perry Neate thereafter. This might have been in tribute to his mother, who died in 1847. As likely it was due to the very large number of John Neates in the area – this theory is backed up by the baptism of a John Powell Neate in 1857, in the next village (Bishops Cannings) - the son of Christina Neate, nee Powell.
John (Perry) Neate married Jane Susan Andrews. They had at least 11 children, four of whom were given 'Perry' as a middle name.
