There is a HANN family in the Odcombe area of Somerset in the 1841 census bearing those three names and all of prosecutable age. The local newspapers of the time may throw up something.

2
Thanks very much. Don't know why I thought it was 1812 (Doh!)

3
Just had another look, it says 'County Sessions' and the date might be 21 March, not 31 March.

4
No, I'm afraid not. It is a complete list for the County Assizes which were tried, presumably for the period ended 26 March 1812.

The above gentlemen were radical dissenters and their activities are in the DNB. They bear my surname and during the ‘Commonwealth’ period, Joseph Hallett (I) was admitted to the rectory of
Chiselborough with West Chinnock, Somerset, which is where a number of my ancestors came from.

Joseph Hallett (I) held the ‘living’ for four years and it is entirely possible that his son
Joseph (II) and indeed some of his other children may have been baptised there. When the
Restoration came in 1660, the previous incumbent, Gauler, was restored and Joseph (I) was thrown out.

I have been trying to expand on the (Joseph's) Hallett family tree in the West Chinnock area to see whether there is any link with my lot which starts with George Hallett (bp 1645, m 1668? Jane?) who had six children: Jane (1668) Joanne (1671) John (1674) George (my ancestor bp1677 m Mary Haggett 1698 bur1749) Suzanna (1679) Samuel (1683) all in the nearby parish of Merriot.

According to DNB, the Joseph's start with:

W Roger Hallet

His son:
Joseph I
bp. 21 May 1620 (Bridport)
d. 14 Mar 1689 (Exeter)
bur. 18 Mar 1689 (St Mary's Exeter)

Elizabeth ?
d. after 1689

Child 1 with Elizabeth
Joseph II
bp. 4 Nov 1656 Som/Dor

Also had 2 sons and 3 daughters, not named in the DNB. These are the ones that I'm really interested in finding.

Joseph II
m. 16 Apr 1688
Anna Poole
d. Nov 1722

6 children with Anna Poole

Anna
b. 7 Jun 1690
bp. 22 Jun 1690

The remaining children all bp in Exeter
3
William

4
Elizabeth

John
b. 26 May 1700
bp. 9 Jun 1700

Any help or steers would be much appreciated.

At the TNA I found the above register (apologies but I can't seem to upload the document). In it Thomas, Ann and Mary HANN, are recorded as acquitted of 'Forcible entry'. Me and another (much more experienced/knowledgeable of the HANN family) researcher have no idea who these people are.
Can anyone help with finding out their wider family and links to other HANN branches?
What was going on in Somerset at the time that they may have been involved in? (Higher entries indicate that 'Riot & Assault' had been committed, possibly around the same time).
Any help would be much appreciated. Peter

Doh! So, our Harry was prob born 12 Aug 1880 (according to 1881 census Usk); the 1879 year from Canadian records may be wrong in that case. OTOH, the census could be wrong I suppose. Either way, if we have the right James Addis with death date of 7 Jul 1877, Elizabeth Williams/Griffiths, following the death of her husband, James Addis, may have been casting about a bit for a new husband, resulting in Harry!?

As we know, she then marries John L Rowe in 1883. What would you say to a potential new husband? You might have to fettle the dates a bit to make the facts fit!

Re Husband and offspring of Elizabeth Williams/Griffiths/Addis/Rowe (b c1851).

Elizabeth Griffiths married James Addis, Sept qtr 1873, Chepstow, 11a 4 (28 Sep St Briavels)

Births Sep 1876 ADDIS, Harry. Chepstow 11a 15 (The only 'Harry' in Monmouthshire betw 1873 and 1879, as far as I can find).

James Addis dies/buried 7 Jul 1877. (St Briavels)

Births Dec 1877 Addis, Maud Elizabeth. Pontypool    11a   168. (Birth one year after Harry; 3-5 months after he died; Jas Addis prob never lived to see his daughter).

1881 Census shows only Maud - no sign of Harry, but at age 5+ he may be visiting elsewhere.

Could the previously (expertly-done) research on Harry's birthdate (from Canadian records) mean that he 'led a lie' (not intentional perhaps) his whole life, believing that he was born on 12 Aug 1879? Perhaps he was James Addis' son after all?

Thanks to Mabel for her lead, and osprey for your latest. I have been searching through those censuses too. 1841 has Caroline 25 (b 1816) at home with John & Ann Richards (I realise limits of the 1841); interestingly, 1851 states Caroline 28 (b 1823) unm dressmaker at home again. John Griffiths had s James b c1838 & dau Sarah b c1844 at home with him in 1851, status widower (allegedly). Mabel's lead had me thinking she was the most likely too but the sticking point seems to be James' children and their birthdates. Still not sure who he conjugated with and when (the first time around!)
