I will contact the original poster, thanks for the suggestion.

Don't know the stowaway story. I do know there was a family legend when I was young that once upon a time we had an ancestor who was a ship's captain and that he refused to participate in the slave trade.

I wouldn't argue your descendant theory, I don't have an ancestry account but I do know some of my relatives do, or have had one in the past. I have never heard the story that was posted earlier about Captain Barrett jumping over board to rescue an enslaved person.

Hi Sandra,

Do you have a source for this -

marriage gives parents of Leonard Barrett

Leonard Dobbin Barrett 1836 - marriage 5 July 1862 - Philadelphia Pennsylvania - aged 26 years.
Roman Catholic -    Church of the Evangelist
Father John Barrett Mother Jane Barrett - Spouse Frederick A Rutledge.

Trying to find evidence that the good captain's middle name was indeed Dobbin, and also some evidence that those are in fact his parent's names.

You posted this earlier in the thread by the way.

Thanks,
Barry

You might find this interesting, my cousin sent it last night.

William Rutledge and Mary Sayer are married in Dublin. He dies in 1846. Mary Rutledge (now 30) leaves from Liverpool for Philly on the Saranac with her children, including Fredericka. (age 9)
