Travelling People / Re: Gypsies/ Travellers in houses
« on: Sunday 26 June 22 13:21 BST (UK)  »
I have seen this in my husbands tree early 1800s in these cases they tended to be agricultural labourers so lived on the farm, probably in a barn or such. He is Romany.

The descendant I was tracing lived exclusively in tents or gipsy caravans after leaving the family which would suggest a history of travelling despite this not showing on the prior censuses. She also married another gipsy. It would have been very uncommon in those times to marry outside the community.

They also came up in different county's on each census - Berkshire, Hampshire, Wiltshire suggesting they were travelling.

Thanks Osprey very interesting that she could be illegitimate. Possibly where the Hicks comes from?

Thank you all for the replies.

The marriage we have on the tree is incorrect, think it was inherited when we imported them from another tree. When I noticed it I was confused how someone got  married 20 years after they died.

We think the 1920 marriage is potentially no them but coincidentally a Joe Hicks marrying a Janet Hughes although the location does match up. We have their first child as born before this marriage. Also Joseph Isaacs is definitely an Isaacs not Hicks. It seems Janet used the Hicks/Hughes name interchangeably.

The 1921 census is helpful thank you it is possible that Janet wasn't sure of her actual age but is documented as being 104 when she died and the 1882 birth is closer to the Charles and Alice family which we have as possibilities for her parents.

Hello all,

I am researching my husband's family tree but have hit a bit of a wall with Janet Hughes/Hicks (also seen spelt Janette) B: 1870 D: 1974.  I will give a bit of background to her and the family.

I know her birth was never registered as I have a newspaper clipping from a story about her turning 100; it stated she was upset she wouldn't get a letter from the queen because of this.

I have her on the 1939 census with her husband Joseph Isaacs B: 1861-1940. At this time they were living in the encampment at South Crofty, Carn Brea. This remains a gypsy site in present day. I also know from the newspaper clippings that she had 17 children and as a child she travelled between Cornwall, Herefordshire and Southampton so would have stopped in all the counties between. I know the family continued to travel to Somerset as my father-in-law did this as a child. I can't find her on any previous censuses, I have tried searching using her children's names but no luck. There are a few Janet Hicks in Cornwall on the 1881/91 census but very difficult to know if this is her. Both her and her husband Joseph are in a shared grave at Gwennap church and I have burial records for them both. This is a link to her in our public tree on Ancestry https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/63884068/person/162202815006/facts

What I would really like to find is her parents. My husband's branch of the family don't have this information but considering the number of children she had I wonder if anyone has researched her with any more success?

If anyone is able to help I would be most appreciative.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

The details for the 1891 census are as follows:
Reg district: St Austell
Sub Reg district: Grampound
ED, Institution/vessel: 9
Piece: 1825
Folio: 86
Page: 8

That census has been transcribed as Blom but when you look at the image it definitely says bland and the children names and ages are all correct.

I had seen the story about the Sarah Hughes who's baby died and wondered if the aunt could be our Sarah. She just doesn't seem to exist before 1871. I did find an article that stated many Romany's had a given name and home name (we have seen this with a few people on our tree). I wonder if she could have gone by a different name.

As many of you have said records may not have the answer. We have been able to do so much of the rest of the tree it just seems a shame the maternal line is more tricky.

I am happy to share my tree on ancestry with anyone if that would be helpful. I really do appreciate all the help.

Best wishes

Hello all,

I am hoping someone may be able to help. I am currently researching my husband's family history but, I have hit a dead end looking for the parents of Sarah Hughes: Birth abt. 1849 Burley Hampshire. She had 12 children and was partnered with Silas Bland: Birth 1852 Dorset possibly never married). 5 of her son's signed up for WW1 on the same day in St Ives in 1915 only 2 of them survived. Sarah never witnessed this as she died in 1904 in Liskeard.

The earliest I can find her is on the 1871 census in Berkshire with her daughter Regenia Hughes: Birth 1870 Wiltshire. She is listed as the Head of the family.

In 1881 she was in Wiltshire with 5 of her Children again listed as Head of the family (the census stated they were encamped on the race course).

In 1891 they were in St Stephen, Cornwall. The census is mis-transcribed as Blom but the entire family were living as Bland.  Silas Bland is head of the family on this census and they are with 8 of their children.

They don't appear on any census after this. Silas Bland died in 1925 in Par Moor, Bodmin.

I think her parents would likely be from Hampshire but, there are many Sarah Hughes in that area at that time. I have ruled out the ones from Portsea but I am starting to think they may not appear on census or in records. I am hoping there is a way past this dead end as I would love to follow on the maternal line.

Thanks in advance for any help. Also, sorry if I have left too much information this is my first post here. If anyone has common ancestors I would be happy to share our tree with you on ancestry.

Best wishes

Hi,

I know this post is from several years ago but I have the information you need.

The gentleman you are looking for went by his mother's surname Hughes. He is my husband's great great grandfather. He has 2 sons named Nelson (mother unknown) and Sidney Hughes (mother: Betsy/bessie Orchard)

His parents were Silas Bland and Sarah Hughes. We have managed to find a large proportion of the bland family but we are stuck on Sarah Hughes.

Let me know if you want any more information I have some censuses and war records.

Best wishes
