Perthshire / Re: Peter Smitton/Smeaton help me find more about him ?

Hi Jessie 46,

No worries.  I have death certificate of Matthew but not his wife Margaret.  Is it possible that you could let me have a copy of that?  I was pretty sure from Scotland's People that I had the correct one.

On the list of Peter and Elizabeth's children I omitted their son Thomas (who married back in Spain and I surmising died here too although not had much luck finding him after 1920)  I have attached the list here with their children's details such as I have.  I've just transferred this file from my old laptop so hope you are able to access it, if not let me know.

I'm still pretty certain that he had at least one child with his second wife but nothing to prove it at the moment.

Just wishing I could find Peter's death!

Anyway I hope you are having a quieter time after your visitors.

Audrey

Also the Peter Smitton that died 1921 in Auchterarder is the son of William and Janet Faichney!

Hi Jessie,
Peter Smitton/Smeaton is not a close relative in one of my trees but he was one of these puzzles that I have always left and gone back to months or years later!

He was I guess working for the Rio Tinto mines in Corrales, Huelva, Spain where there was a huge population of workers from UK and where he must have been working when he first married in Gibraltar.  Quite interesting reading if you Google it.   I do not have a death for him, I'm still looking for that, but he died before 1947 as his second wife was listed as a widow when she died.  I have a feeling that he died abroad but will continue the search.  (He is not the Peter Smeaton who dies in Falkirk with mothers maiden name McCallum as he was the son of David & Grace McCallum - I have that death certificate!)

I am attaching information from my Peters tree (I hope it shows up okay, if not let me know) and will then send information for his children from his first marriage as I've been able to track most of that, but will do that another day.  I would have thought he would have had more children with his second wife but so far have not found any.

Hope this will allow you to update your tree a little and as I say I will add further information on his children in the next few days.

Hi Jessie,

Hope you are still on Rootschat as this is a very old thread.

Did you ever get any further with Peter Smeaton the son of Matthew born 1844?  If not, I may have some information that may be of interest to you.

Regards,
Audrey

Hi,

Why don't you try a local Kirriemuir Facebook group and see if anyone there would be willing to help?  Always a chance that nice local person will be happy to look for you.

Regards,

There's a Charles Smeaton (born 1880 Spain) in the 1901 to 1921 census reports in the London area.
1901 - he's a Merchant's Clerk. 1911 - he's a Shorthand Typist. He's a boarder in 1901 and 1911.

Thanks, I already have all of this information.

1963 death for Lizzie Morrison Smeaton in Bromley, Kent.

Where did you find the newspaper obits for Peter Smeaton 1915?

https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/
Cheers, I don't have access to that.  I'll maybe try and take out a sub for a month when I have a bigger list of things to look for.

Hi,

No this isn't my Peter.  I'm pretty sure of his background being born 1844 Auchterarder, Perthshire  to Matthew Smeaton (Smitton) and Margaret Callum.
(McCallum)
Thanks

Could this be connected?

GRO Consular Death Indices (1849 To 1965)
1901-05
James Smeaton
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Sept 1874 marriage notice for Peter Smeaton (of Cádiz) and Elizabeth Morrison, daughter of the late James Morrison, Auchterarder (?) There are 1915 newspaper obits for a Peter Smeaton in Scotland.

Two additional births in Huelva, Spain 1876-1880:
Charles Smeaton and Lizzie Morrison Smeaton.
Also, a Thomas Smeaton born in Huelva 1901-1905.

Question: What is Peter Smeaton's occupation on his son's 1899 marriage certificate?

Thanks that might possibly be the death I'm looking for for Matthew James.

Peter Smeaton and Elizabeth Morrison married 2/09/1874 in the Church of Holy Trinity, in Gibraltar so that fits with marriage notice you've found.  Elizabeth's father was listed as Jose Morrison and no mention on being deceased but that doesn't really matter one way or the other.  Peter was also born in Auchterarder so that also ties in that they knew one another from home.  Where did you find the newspaper obits for Peter Smeaton 1915?  I only have limited access with Ancestry at the moment.

Yes I found the first two children you mention along with another daughter whose birth I can't find anywhere but she too is listed as  born in Corrales, Huelva and the relationship to her siblings tracks.  I've not found any mention of Thomas so I'll look further into that.

Elizabeth Morrison died in 1888 in London and Peter married again in 1890 London and is at that time listed as a "merchant"on his second marriage certificate.   On the 1889 marriage of Matthew, Peter was listed as a metal broker.  Everything seems to connect to the Rio Tinto mining community in Huelva.

Thanks for the information.
