Sorry Pennie, I didn't actually answer your question!

I don't think you will find the PRs have the info you want either.

Sorry!

Hi Pennie

Unfortunately, my experience is that the earlier marriage certs give very little info apart from the names of the couple, whether they were of the parish, whether bachelor or spinster and the witness names, and the date of course.

I have a cert dated 1833 and was desperate to find the parents details, but no such luck.

Good luck

Christine

Images for births & deaths on freebmd go up to 1935 at the moment.
You can VIEW online using that, searches probably won't cover it.

Pauline

Am I being especially thick - please can you explain that?

I've just tried, as an example, my husband born in 1935 and his sister 1934 and got nothing for either.

Thanks

Hi there

According to my CD of Oxon Parish records, my 3 x gt. grandfather, James Bushnell b. 1806 Whitchurch had parents William & Ann.

William seems to have been b. 1772 and married Ann Smith in 1803.  However, the burial records state that William (if it's the same one) died in 1795 - 8 years before their firstborn Sarah in 1803.

Can anyone sort this mystery out for me please?

Thanks

Christine

Hi Cougar

You must think me very rude for not replying to your response on 27 Feb, but for some reason my computer didn't alert me to your reply and I've only just found it!

However, many thanks for the info on the Archivist at Holborn Library and I will follow this up ASAP.

The name of the lady who I have reason to believe became Matron in 1905 was Eliza Ellen Dunaway.

Hi there

Does anyone know anything about the House of Mercy, Park, House, North Hill?  It began as London Diocesan Penitentiary in 1854 for reformation of fallen women!  Closed in 1940.

When my aunt died a few years ago she left me some items which began my family history search.  Among these things were 2 birthday books and lots of unmarked photos and postcards.  One of the birthday books had the words "To Dear Ellen from (I think, NP or ND).  Underneath in different writing is EED Whit Sunday 1905.

Inside on 19 January is written "Came to House of Mercy, Highgate as Matron" and on 7 October the entry "Eliza Ellen Dunaway", presumably her birthday.

As far as I can tell, Eliza or Ellen has no connection to my family, but why did her book come into my family?

I also have a postcard with a photo of what I presume is the House of Mercy, with 6 nurses stading in front of the building.  Is one of these Ellen?

I've found a bit about the House from the internet, but what I would like is some info about the staff etc.

Hi Cougar

Do you know anything about The House of Mercy, Highgate?

I have an birthday book, left to me by an aunt.  In it there is
an entry on 19 January 1905 saying"Came to House of Mercy Highgate as Matron".  Whoever this was, it was not my late aunt, or as far as I know any other relative.

I have reason to believe that the birthday book belonged to an Eliza Ellen Dunaway, although I can't find any connection between her and my family.

The search I've made on the web doesn't come up with much about the House of Mercy.

I would be interested to hear anything else that you can find out.

Thanks and regards

Christine
