Hi Martin
Delighted to hear from Caroline's side.
Yes Emma died in the Bracebridge Asylum 10 March 1912, but we have been unable to locate her grave. She was most likely buried in the grounds. I have seen her medical records from her admission to and time in the asylum but some are missing.
The poor law records indicated that the Board of Guardians asked Caroline to contribute to her mother's upkeep when she was admitted but Caroline refused because she said her mother had £100 which was being held by a Mr Stocks. When I last visited the archives (2012) the later correspondence was still closed so I could not follow that through.
Does your side of the family have any info on Emma? We have not discovered what happened to her husband Thomas Hurd and despite extensive searches I have never been able to find Emma on the 1881 census. Did they emigrate or hide from the authorities in some way? Did she maintain contact with Caroline up to her death in any way? My sister is desperate to find a photo of Emma.
I can see that you have sent a direct message but I seem unable to reply to that thread. I have not used this forum before, is there a means to communicate directly and then exchange documents if necessary? I have been researching this for close to 40 years so I do have quite a lot of info.
I use both find my past and ancestry but have not uploaded my tree (long story).
I hope this is helpful.
Karen
