My Grandfather Albert was born in Winchester. In 1911 he was an insurance agent in Tonbridge. Not sure when he joined the Territorials but presumably on or about the outbreak of war, so probably not going to find out anything more.

Thanks for your help. Peter.

Thanks very much for info. Do you think it would be worth going to the National Archives at Kew to see if they've got any more? It would be quite easy for me as my son doesn't live far away.

World War One / Albert Godwin - 6th Bn. East Surreys and Middlesex Regt

My Grandfather Albert John Alliston Godwin (b 1878) served initially in the 6th Bn East Surrey Regt - we have two photos showing their distinctive cap badge. But his medal roll card shows him as a Sgt. in the Middx. Regt.No 235372. He had the British War medal and the Victory medal but neither of the Stars, so presumably he didn't go abroad until 1916 or 17. How do I find out which Bn. of the Middx Regt he was in and when he went abroad? The reference alongside his medals is E/1/102B41 page 6973. What info am I likely to get by visiting Kew? He was apparently gassed but managed to last until he was 77. Any help much appreciated.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: Gover family - Winchester

I imagine Gover & Cover are essentially the same name. Although I don't think Elizabeth Cover b 1740 is connected to the Govers from Mottisfont that I  mentioned, she does appear on a different part of my tree. As you say she married Thomas Goodchild. He was born 1738 the son of Thomas Goodchild b1695 and Anne Dumper b 1710. Thos and Elizabeth had at least one child Anthony b 1768 who married Mary Humby b 1775. In turn they had a son William Goodchild b 1813 who married Sarah Godwin b 1824. (All this info has come from a Sylvia Dumper in Australia). Sarah Godwin was the daughter of John Godwin b 1788 and Mary Anne Pearce b 1807, whom he married when she was only 16 with the consent of her guardian Wm Lovelock. (Wm Lovelock was married to Priscilla Godwin, John's sister). John and Priscilla were two of the children of Alexander Godwin (my gggg grandfather) and Betty Gover as mentioned in my earlier post. All of this would be a lot better explained by means of a tree - I hope it's clear from my description.
Hope this helps - Goddo.

Hi Cynfran
Note you were researching GOVER family in Winchester (4 years ago!)
I'm descended from Alexander GODWIN who married Betty GOVER in Winchester in 1763. She is somehow related to the following GOVER families but I have yet to find out how.
1. Wm GOVER from Mottisfont d 1766 m Mary - children Wm 1744, Orange 1754, Mary 1756. Grandchildren Sophia 1777 James 1784 who married Leah (one of Alex. & Betty's daughters), Wm 1781, Edward 1787 & Orange 1800.
2. John Gover also from Mottisfont d 1797 m Rachel HATCHER - children Priscilla b/d 1762, Mary 1762, Elizabeth 1773 and Maria who was a witness at Alex. and Betty's marriage.
Both of these families moved to Winchester and were carpenters. Not sure if there's a connection to your Wm GOVER. Do you know any more? (Sorry if this is a bit long winded.)

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Alexander Godwin b abt 1742
« on: Friday 31 July 09 21:21 BST (UK)  »
I have posted before under the heading of William and Henry Godwin, but now I need some help regarding my gggg grandfather Alexander Godwin.

He was born about 1742, and married firstly Elizabeth Holmes in St Faith Winchester in 1769, and secondly after the death of Elizabeth he married Betty Gover in St Mary Kalendar Winchester in 1783.

Alexander does not appear to have been born in Winchester, so where did he come from?
The only candidate I can find is Alexander Goddin (Godwin, Goddin, Godden appear to be interchangeable) born in Broughton, Hants in 1745 to Walter Goddin and Susannah nee Morgan. There was also Phillip  b 1743 and Walter b 1751.

If this is the same Alexander I can get back to Godwin Godwin (or Goddin Goddin) b Winterbourne Gunner (Wilts) in 1648. The only pointer I have to it being the same Alexander is that one of Alexander's daughters was christened Susannah.

However I have trawled through most of the Hampshire parishes that are not covered by IGI at the HRO (also a few of the Wiltshire parishes), and I can't find anyone else. If it is not the same Alexander, then what happened to the one from Broughton?

My query is really is there anything else I can do to try and verify a connection – or can I be reasonably certain it's the same Alexander?

By the way Walter Goddin appears to have died in 1758 in Broughton, but I can't find out what happened to Susannah. She does not appear on the Hampshire burial index, nor on the post 1754 marriage index for Hampshire.

Can anyone help please?

Hi Nell

Well we've moved on a bit since I last posted - and you were quite right.
Henry Godwin b1820 was the illegitimate son of Susannah b 1795 St Faith Winchester. In turn she was the daughter of Alexander Godwin and Betty Gover married at St Mary Kalendar Winchester in 1769. Alexander (and family) lived in the parish of St Faith, but he doesn't appear to have been born there. So now I intend to start searching nearby parishes unless anyone can enlighten me. I guess he would have been born about 1745. I suppose land enclosures would have affected population movement at about that time.

I now assume that William Godwin (carpenter) was an invention on the part of Henry, either knowingly or otherwise.

Hi Nell
Thanks for prompt reply.
I must say I suspect that Henry (mother=Susannah Godwin unmarried) is my ancestor. Presumably it would be quite unusual not to have one's child baptised, and as you say, there are no others recorded.
This would also account for why I can't find any brothers or sisters.
If so (1) was Godwin Susannah's real name, or did she take the father's name?
        (2) Did William Godwin, carpenter, really exist?
I have found one example of a baptism in Winchester of a Susannah whose mother was Susannah Boyl (unmarried). Unfortunately the child dies a few days later. But then some years later there is another Susannah born to Joseph Boyl and Susannah. It looks like she eventually got round to marrying the father. So was it common practice for an unmarried mother to just assume the name of the father when she had the child baptised? Maybe so.
As to whether William really existed I did note that two of Henry Godwin's sons became carpenters like their elusive grandfather, so maybe he did.
I would welcome your opinion on my hypotheses, but I imagine I've now hit a brick wall so to speak, and won't get back any further.
However I shall keep trying other leads.
