South Africa / Re: Ernest George Mackenzie b.1892 mystery emigration and death
« on: Monday 03 November 25 21:53 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,
Thanks so much to everyone here for the help in shedding more light on this mystery. Apologies for the long delay in getting back; I have had quite a lot of work at uni at the moment so slightly paused researching. A few concluding thoughts:
- It does absolutely seem like the man who died in '56 is our man. I shall definitely buy the probate record and compare signatures, which would hopefully verify this
- I wonder where the whole SA thread might have come from; my suspicion is this was something told as a 'cover story' for what seems to be an unofficial divorce and cohabitation arrangement between our man and Genene, who seems never to have divorced William Buckley and chaned her name. Maybe the Dutch surname played a role here too
-Anyone got any suggestions as to where I could go further with this; would there be anywhere i could look to trace his journalistic career?
-I will compile everything here to send to my godfather, for whom I am doing this research (EG Mackenzie was his grandfather)

Once again, warmest thanks for helping me out with this  ;D

South Africa / Ernest George Mackenzie b.1892 mystery emigration and death
« on: Thursday 30 October 25 14:43 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,
I am looking to trace a man who mysteriously emigrated to South Africa from England some time in the 30s or 40s. Ernest George Mackenzie was born in Bedminster in 1892 to Henry William Mackenzie and Florence Louisa Fulford. He can be easily traced in the censuses in the Fulham/Kensington area up until 1921. He worked as an insurance official, and had four siblings: Arthur Henry William (1884-1963), Henry John (1885-1938), Charles Henry (1887-1929) and Dorothy Kathleen (1889-1949). He married Florence Louisa Cass Fulford and had one son, Kenneth Francis Ewart Mackenzie (1918-1997).  The family story goes that he emigrated, abandoning his family, and last saw his son some time in the 30s, before emigrating to SA. I would like to trace what happened to him and when he died.
Best wishes,
Francis

Dear all,
I am a complete newbie to Channel Islands genealogy, and would be grateful for some help in finding a possible marriage or death for John Townsend Lowther on either Jersey or Guernsey. Lowther was born in Bath in 1793 to John (1758-1829) and Mary Walter (1759-1818), and was brother to Henry (1787-1795), Mary Walter Lowther (1792-1827), Betty (1794-1794), Charles James (1800-1866) and John (1802-1857). Bancrupcy proceedings list him in London in 1821, followed by Guernsey in 1826, listed as a 'merchant' and 'varnish manufacturer'. Lowther's father John moved with him to Guernsey, being buried in St Peter Port in 1829. Lowther then shows up in St Helier in '51, where he is listed as a widower followed by a  return to London, with him living in the West London Union Workhouse in '61 and dying in Holborn shortly after. I would like to identify his wife and see if they had any children.
Best wishes,
Francis

Have seen 'Collins' on ancestry too. No evidence attached to any of the trees though...

Suffolk / marriage or death for Susannah Crick b.1779 Bury St Edmunds
« on: Wednesday 20 August 25 08:47 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,
Hope everyone is enjoying their summer. I would like to find a marriage or death certificate for Susannah Crick, born in 1779 in Bury St Edmunds. She was daughter to Philip Crick (1758-1813) and Susannah Mills (1759-1832, and sister to Philip (1778-1816), Elizabeth (1782-?), Charlotte (1784-?), Mary Ann (1787-?), Edmund (1790-), Frances Sophia (1792-1861) and George (1796-1838) All the children were baptised in 1797, ruling out a death in infancy.
Best wishes,
Francis

London and Middlesex / A maiden name for Ann Priest (1767-1837)
« on: Wednesday 20 August 25 08:37 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,
Hope everyone is having a great summer. I would like to ask for some help to try and find a maiden name and marriage certificate for an ancestor of mine. Ann married John Priest (1769-1835) some time in the 1780s or 1790s. The couple lived in Marylebone and baptised James (1796-), Sarah (1796-), Charles (1798-1858). Mary Ann (1800-), Samuel (1803-1837), Maria (1806-1822) and George Henry (1812-1888). All these children were baptised in Marylebone. An additional two children, Edward and Sarah, both b. 1797 were baptised in Pancras; it is unclear whether we're dealing with the same family here. Ann died at Lambeth Walk in '37, with her husband dying nearby in Park Place, Lambeth, aslo in the parish of St Mary's. So far, the couple's wedding certificate is stubbornly elusive, but I would lik eto find some evidence of their wedding in order to get a maiden name for Ann.
Best wishes,
Francis

Hi all,
Hope evryone's having a wonderful summer. I'd like to ask for some help in locating the marriage/deaths of three brothers born c. 1840 in Lambeth. It's a strange family, with people having chaned names a few times. The brothers in question are Thomas Watson b. 1834, Albert Watson b. 1841 and Charles Watson b. 1843. They are the extramarital children of Thomas Trinder (1787-1852) and Frances Watson nee Dodson (1804-).  Following the death of his wife Martha, Thomas cohabited with Frances Watson and has three children with her. Thomas and Frances can be seen on Lambeth rough settlement exams, about which more information can be found here: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=849100.0
Note that the children changed their names for an unknwn reason. Thomas is too old for a GRO registration, but 'Albert' was registered as
TRINDER, THOMAS  JAMES AUGUSTUS
Mother's Maiden Surname: DODSON
GRO Reference: 1841  J Quarter in LAMBETH  Volume 04  Page 259
and 'Charles' was registered as
TRINDER, CHARLES  HENRY ADOLPHUS THOMAS
Mother's Maiden Surname: DODSON
GRO Reference: 1843  M Quarter in LAMBETH
Frances and the three brothers can be found in '51: https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/8860/records/1927917?tid=115002760&pid=142318149498&ssrc=pt

Albert and Charles are living together in '61, Albert a potter's labourer and Charles a 'ILLEGIBLE board cutter'. Thomas can't be found with them.
