John McPhail's parents were Charles McPhail (listed as a Butcher on the Death cert and Labourer on the Marriage Cert) and Margaret McKay (another common Rathlin Name).

Ann Jane (McKillop) McPhail's parents were Archibald a quarryman and Ann McLaughlin (a couple with these names married in Ramoan in 1833).

As I said, I can't find John or Ann Jane in 1881 or 1891. But at 24 Dalrymple Street in 1881 there is a John McKay

From the Greenock Telegraph:

Richard McPhail died at 18 Dalrymple Street, Greenock on 12th March 1912 (Greenock Telegraph 13.3.1912)

John McPhail, died at 24 Dalrymple Street, Greenock on 17th January 1899 age 54 - wife Ann Jane (Greenock Telegraph 17.01.1899)

Death cert on Scotlandspeople.gov.uk

GROS 564/02/0025

So that should have his parents

Mary and James married in 1900 in St Mary's Greenock, her father was listed as deceased.

Widow, Ann Jane McPhail, three of Mary's siblings and a Grand-daughter, Ann Jane McGee are in Greenock in 1900. Same Dalrymple Street address as given on Mary's marriage cert.

The children's ages range from 22 - 15 all reportedly born in Greenock.

Can't see this family in or around Greenock in 1881 or 1891 using search strings of M*c*a?l

There is a birth cert for Richard McPhail in Greenock in 1886, this should give the place of the parents marriage.

Ann Jane (McKillop) McPhail died in 1931 in Greenock, that should give her parents

There are no deaths of John M*c*a?l in Renfrewshire between 1885 (a year before son Richard's birth) and 1900 (when Mary marries).

Since John and Ann Jane were married after statutory records were kept in Ireland, the certificate from 1868 will have both father's names. Church records, if extant, may name both sets parents.

Loads of Rathin families lived in Dalrymple Street I'd be VERY interested to hear what you find out about this family.

Hi again Julie,

I've just sent a personal message requesting your e-mail address to send a fairly lengthy chart of the Fitzgeralds.

Cheers,

Hi Julie,

John Fitzgerald and Elizabeth (Betty) Wilson were my G-G-G Grandparents. They had another two children you perhaps don't know about, James born in 1820 and Mary Davidson Fitzgerald born in 1822.

John and Betty married in October 1814.

I would be very interested to find out where you fit in, I only have information from Peter, who moved to Scotland.

Renfrewshire / Re: McClenaghan's of Port Glasgow

Most, if not all, of the Port Glasgow/Greenock McClenaghans stem from David and Catherine Gatens, who were both dead before sons John and David married in their early 20's in 1902 and 1904. James, another son was born 1874 in Port Glasgow. And Bernard in 1886 (he died in the war in1915).

David, the father was a sailor, and had married for a second time in 1888 to Margaret McLeady. The first marriage to Catherine Gatens was in Liverpool in 1873. They were living at Ropeworks Lane by 1881:

David's sister, Catherine married in Port Glasgow in 1872, sister-in-law to be, Catherine Gatens was a witness. Catherine Gatens died in 1886.

David (the father's) parents were Bernard and Mary Gillen (almost certainly of Down or Derry)

Mary Gillen died a 50 year old widow in Port Glasgow in 1872. Her parents were James and Margaret McDermott. It is most likely that there will be a death record for the husband in Ireland.

Mary, Catherine and Catherine's dauthter, Mary (wrong side of the sheets) had arrived in Port Glasgow by 1871 and were among families who remained friends for generations.

Indeed, a relly of mine, Agnes McQuilkin,  was witness at son David's marriage to Bridget McGinley in 1904. Later David's daughter, Dorothea, married James McQuilkin of a related family.

Hi there Avro,

I have a fair amount of information on your (and other) Schilps to whom you are related. Including your Johann's birth in Borgentreich, Westfalen, Prussia, his parents, Franz Schilpp and Carlina Hartmann's marriage and their children.

I have John's wife Christian/Christina HIBBELER's birth, parents and siblings too, this family were also from Westfalen, Prussia.

I'm trying to work out a positive link to Frederick Schilp (Westfalen) who turns up in Greenock (from West Ham) at exactly the same time as John. They are not brothers but are perhaps cousins.

Frederick's parents were Joseph Schilp and Sophia Eikermann.

I'm not related I was just doing a wee favour for the wife of one of John's descendants.
