Westmorland / Re: The Earls and the Wilkinson families Westmorland
« on: Saturday 21 June 25 15:55 BST (UK)  »
I’ve got to Rev John Earl father William Earl b 1712 Colby d 1776 . Interestingly none of the best lieces of evidence comes via the maternal lines . Rev John wife Hannah Wilkinson b 1749 d 1835 came from DUpton just outside Appleby her ancestors seen to be obviously Wilkinsons and Dobsons and on the maternal side Jacksons . This seems to tie my Earls to this area around Appleby . Plus other evidence that Hannah Wilkinson or Earl died at Wigton where my branch settled and her obituary is mentioned in various newspapers stating she was the widow of Rev John Earl late Chaplain at Appleby Gaol . I’m not sure about the Warwick Bridge connection I think if there is a link it will be further back before my line and Cody Cockwill line moved to Wigton and Warwick Bridge respectively. I’d have to do Family Tree dna il take a wild guess the Earl name Jarl in Norse means noble warrior so a Danish link . I have Yorkshire and eastern England in my dna so maybe that’s it who knows . If anyone wants to contact me anywhere else email etc let me know Christopher.

Hi Cody I have came across the Warwick Bridge Earls before after contacting the Earl surname dna project on family tree dna . I g he ave very few real surnamed Earl dna matches and little to go on . But I think we need to work together on this and compare notes ie family tree research and dna analysis . We could correspond via email or other mediums Chris ps il send a message here first

Selkirkshire / George Dixon or Dickson of Ettrick
« on: Thursday 05 September 24 15:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi Charles Dixon or Dickson was ancestor who settled at Middleburn near Eskdalemuir over in Dumfriesshire. He married Joan Little at Canonbie in 1806. Kirk Session at Canonbie  shows they were rebuked for their behaviour .
However in examining Charles  death most censuses state he was born at Eskdalemuir . However as I have discovered another man born around the same time at Eskdalemuir 1780/1 it has been proven that Scotlands People entry at Eskdalemuir is not him but another Charles . A Memorial Inscription has him dead and buried circa 1863 at Middleburn near Eskdalemuir one death entry for Eskdalemuir for a Charles Dixon .
Also interesting is Charles marriage it states Charles Dixon of Ettrick ie Selkirkshire . Ettrick is at the most 15 miles over the county line into the Scottish Borders from Eskdalemuir but not impossible that he worked on a farm or despite what the censuses say was possibly both there but no entry there for a birth . Any help appreciated Chris

« on: Wednesday 14 August 24 18:14 BST (UK)  »
This is for Maiden Stone thanks it seems I’ve found one of my ancestors siblings thanks to the link you sent I missed it at the time Thomas Crosby b 1 December Elphin Roscommon . Parents Michael Crosby and Elizabeth Tracy . I’m wondering now if his siblings can be found at Elphin Parish I’m not sure of exact birth dates all based on Scottish death certificates . Thomas now is nor b 1833 but rather 1826 . Then there is Patrick who is born circa 1830s most likely 1836 then Elizabeth between 1841 and 1843 then Maria between 1844 and 1848 . Thank you Chris

Down / Wallace family Country Down
« on: Wednesday 14 August 24 16:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi can anyone help me out . I have an ancestor Samuel Wallace from Ireland now by DNA it indicates County Down . I have two other Ulster and Irish lines I know where they are and it’s definitely not these lines .
Samuel moved from Ireland to south west Scotland to the county of Kirkbrightshire . Approx today’s Dumfries and Galloway region . It seems the Wallace’s may have been Ulster Scots . On various censuses in Balmaclellan Kirkudbrightshire Samuel is listed with his wife Agnes Forrest herself having an Irish mother Margaret Watson b circa 1772 and father William who was a Stonemason / Labourer his nationality has not been determined but may have been born in the 1770s and died before 1823. But Agnes born in Buittle  Kirkudbrightshire.
Anyway Samuel is variously put between 1841 51 and 61 as being born 1797 1802 1804 . He married Agnes in a Presyberterian marriage ceremony at Springholm in 1823 . He died in 1866 his occupation was a Labourer aged 66 .
His parents were stated as Peter Wallace Labourer , many trees have his birth as 1776 Ireland death unknown . His mother Elizabeth Wallace maiden surname Rutherford she was b circa 1777 and a death record in Balmaclellan Kirkudbrightshire is there which states she died in 1837 , no other information . Ireland has a lack of records but with the recovery of much records supposedly destroyed in 1922 I might be able to find something or someone might help or direct me thanks Chris

« on: Wednesday 14 August 24 15:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi since my posting I have also found another sibling Robert Currie b circa 1810 possibly Urr Kirkudbrightshire d 1885 Gasstown. William Currie the younger b 1821 Lochmaben d Hawthorn cottage Gateside of Trench Gasstown 1890 older brother . How do I know that ? . On the death entry for Robert is his nephew William Irving Currie of Flosh Gasstown. William Irving Currie is a son of William Currie the younger and Mary Ann Jardine and a relation of mine . He himself died in Flosh 1888 aged 32 a Joiner Chris .

Cumberland / Barnfather Family Wetheral Lanercost Kirkoswald
« on: Wednesday 10 January 24 17:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi the Barnfather family in Wetheral are ancestors of mine . John Barnfather b 1763 Wetheral Cumberland d 1829 ? and Ann Atkinson b 1761 Wetheral d 1829 ? . I have examined various online trees Familysearch Ancestry Wikitree . I have not been able to research English records yet but my ancestor Jane Barnfather b Wetheral 1794 married 1 James Adamson then my ancestor 2 George Graham a Tailor from Stapleton and was living at Hillbeck . Jane was daughter of John and Ann . John Barnfather line in Wetheral is already documented in a rootschat piece of research . But these trees and other records in sites Find My Past Ancestry Familysearch etc suggest he descends from the Lanercost Barnfather family and in turn right back to Gilbert Barnfather and his father Robert in Swarthgill Kirkoswald near Penrith . I noticed something else that the Barnfather family according to a DNA project descend from Viking blood and that in Britain they go back to a Barnfather in Lapley Staffordshire with the name previously being Barnfeilde sounds Danish . I’m aware the Barnfather family is one of largest northern families in Cumberland and Northumberland. In this regard they were usually on the receiving end of reivers or border reivers but some sources suggest they were reivers . It would be interesting if anyone had an accurate Barnfather family tree that they could send me thank you Chris .
