Hi Cazza,
here we go then! This is what I have, with sources:
William Bussell m Ruth Baker East Stoke 10th Sept 1746 (BVRI 2) William was buried in wool in Cheselbourne 22nd Mar 1780
Children - William christened 4th Jun 1750 in Higher Melcombe Chapel
James christened 14th Jan 1751 Higher Melcombe Chapel. (PR's) There is another christening on the BVRI 2, called James, in Cheselbourne 16th Mar 1747.
Higher Melcombe was once a thriving rural village in the heart of the Blackmore Vale - real Hardy country, now only a farm survives.
On our side James married first Hannah Locke on 19th Sept 1775 in Cheselbourne, witnesses were Mary Lock and John White. James signed his name and it is recognisable on his later will. (PR's)
Children were:
James christened 9th Dec 1776
John christened 25th Feb 1779
Mary christened 20th Jun 1780, all in Cheselbourne (PR's)
Both John and Mary married in Stourton Caundle. James (1776) died in SC and left a will.
Hannah was buried on 25th Feb 1784
James now married Susannah Major on 29th Oct 1788 in Cheselbourne, witnesses were JOhn Dominey and John White.
Children were:
Joseph born c 1790
Maria born c 1792
Job and Isaac. A note in the Stourton Caundle register reads 'These children were each several years old and were christened when their elder brother Joseph was buried'. Date was 6th Sept 1799.
Maria survived and married in SC, Job was buried 29th Sept 1799, Isaac 12th Sept 1799. Sad little tale.
Think that might be enough for now! There are Bussells in the Stourton Caundle register in the early 1700's, including a Richard and Jean Bussell who were having children there in the 1750's, I rather suspect they were related to our Cheselbourne lot.
The Wyke Regis Bussells were shipbuilders and chandlers, while ours were plasterers and tilers so I believed them to be a separate line. I did some research on that line for someone in Canada and I coudln't find a connection, doesn't mean there isn't one!
more to come yet...Jean
