Thank you for that but yes I did realise that it was a very old post but I thought it may be of some use to someone somewhere. Regards

In North Antrim/Derry the surname Gemmell is also Gamble  :)

Registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 and the first complete census for Ireland is 1901- all too late to find this particular family.

I'm equally in the process of tracing back the lines from my grandmother Agnes Howard Gemmell (Coatbridge Scotland). Just to say that in using Scotlands People website and the various documents therein (births, marriages, deaths and census) and ensuring each family is linked to the previous one I've come across as spellings: Gemmell, Gemmel, Gammal, and Gamble. So one has to be patient and dig, dig, dig. Just a wee tip - if the town of birth is known (often from the census) but one can't find the records try just the year(s), town name, and first name: that's how I finally found my great grand father's birth record - recorded under the name Gammall (but written as Gemmell in the register). Happy hunting

Ok thank you - don’t know that part of Eire. For myself I use to go fishing a way past Galway out into Joyce country and on Lough Inagh in Connemara. Beautiful area. Happy hunting in your genealogy. Regards

Thank you Kiltaglassan I confirm the date 1899 (October 3rd). I'm currently just gathering as much information as possible before going back into FamilySearch to carry out a real spring clean.
BTW a great name Kiltaglassan. A user name, but Scottish by any chance? Regards

Thank you Jon_ni for your reply and yes the starting pointed quoted is correct (my mother). I’ve been able to find on Scotlands People a certain amount of information but come to a dead end re the Irish information. Will keep posting and looking. Regards

Hello
I'm new to RootsChat and came here as I was researching a Stephen Howard Gemmell who is my great grand father via my maternal side. I currently use FamilySearch for building my tree.
I'm descended from Kathleen Bromby (née Tennent) GWLJ-K9D - refer to FamilySearch.
I'm still very much researching the Gemmell and Gardner lines but in reference to previous posts re Gemmell I confirm:
Stephen Howard Gemmell B 1856 D 1911 married in 1881 Jean Scott Gardner B 1861 or 1862 D 1944 - for the latter I'm still trying to find a birth registration to confirm the dates. NB there's a bit of confusion between Jean and Jeanie with the marriage certificate and birth registrations of their children use Jeanie, the death register for her husband uses Jane. NB if you look up this part of the tree on FamilySearch ignore most of the sources added by others as I'm still investigating how valid they are.
The Gemmell children were:
Agnes Howard B 1885 (my grand mother)
Helen Jeffrey Gardner B 1883
Jean Scott B 1888 (to be confirmed)
Margaret Hogg Fergason B 1889
Robert Howard Gardner B 1890 (and not 1888 as written elsewhere on this subject) bu 17 Feb is correct
John Gardner B 1892 (to be confirmed)
William Howard B 1895 (to be confirmed)
In my mother's notes she states that following the death of her husband Jean/Jeannie Scott Gemmell emigrated to Canada taking with her daughters Jean and Margaret, plus her sons John and William Howard. The latter son was KIA in 1918.
Under FamilySearch my user name is JohnBromby

Scotland / Re: Apparent contradiction in Sasines - any ideas?
« on: Monday 02 September 24 16:27 BST (UK)  »
Hello
This is not a reply to answer your initial query re the contradiction in sasines but rather to add that the James Tennent referred to is most likely to be Dr James Tennent, b1773 d1855, and was the second Provost of Airdrie. I note the spelling of BredinHill with an "i" in my mother's family notes, most likely taken from the stained glass window in the New Monkland Church the spelling is with an "a" ie BredenHill.
James Tennent is my 3rd Great Grandfather. If you have come across any other mentions or information re James Tennent I would be very grateful to know.
Kind regards
