Dunbartonshire / Re: What was Robb's Land?
« on: Saturday 15 April 06 22:47 BST (UK)  »
sorry maybe i wasn't clear when i said it was not a tennament.
I lived in duntocher for years, and still visit regularly - there is nothing now or in the past that could ever be considered a tennament,  that makes me 100% certain anything called xxx land does not refer to a tenament building.

The area was originally farming, then became used for mills and similar (most immigration can be explained by reading the clydebank story) therefor the 'sub-districts' were known by the land name, munn's land, smith's land etc.

i should also mention - be carefull of anything that says Duntocher, in the parish of Old Kilpatrick - this can be deceptive as duntocher and old kilpatrick are a good few miles apart - in my searching i've found it always refers to duntocher, not old kilpatrick.

the 'land' refers to people working land belonging  to..ie munn's land is land belonging to the munn estate/family - you'll find most have and address of main street/xxx land - there are a few in and around duntocher where there have never been tennements (even not) so it is def not that.

is it possible your yoker is actually duntocher (often classed as part of/together with old kilmatrick) there's a few different spellings around but anything that sounds like dun-toe-ker is a good guide

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Re: Private Asylums Yorkshire
« on: Monday 10 April 06 00:10 BST (UK)  »
sorry to hyjack your thread, but i'm looking for info on who worked in the 'asylums' at the 1901 census, i've a relative i know was working in an asylum in hull that year, probably just as a domestic, but can't find her anywhere on a census and can't seem to find census for asylum. (thinking she migh thave lived in) Any idea where i should start?

for your search Weaverthorpe near Sledmere was a wholey private asylum, it received only private patients and there's a few families in the local area that seem to have members in & out all their lives. If you have a look at weaverthorpes notices of discharges, it's often the same person over and over, with them staying only a month or so at a time.

southcoates on the otherhand, was a licensed house, that took private & paupers. Averaging only 6 patients it's called sumercoates in the 1844 Report.

try the malton messenger archives for more info covering the asylum (one record of a death "On Monday, the 16th ult., at the Pauper Lunatic Asylum, York, Mr Geo.BROOMFIELD, printer, late of Stokesley") gives and idea what you might find

sorry i can't be more help

There's alot of 'lands' in duntocher, smiths land, munns land and so on.
The whole area was farming, and it really meant they lived on the farmers land. T
he majority of the houses in duntocher are not that old, but most areas/houses are named after historical things in the area, (the old mill is actually a car garage etc) it's amazingly unlikely the houses or even the area your family were in at the time are still there in anything like the same form.

There is bremmners cottages, and there was a bremmners department store (in the old fashioned sence of the word). I beleive there is still one at milport but not sure if that'll help you trace family!
