Scotland / Bain / Baine / Eldred / Rose / Bedingfeld
« on: Monday 27 May 24 10:25 BST (UK)  »
Sorry if asking in wrong section.

I am so lost with my family right now. I am trying to piece together whos who here.
I have that my 5th gr, grandmother was Mary Delitia / Delicia ROSE married Francis Philip BEDINGFELD in 1815 in Hastings, Sussex, England.

Mary was the daughter of Forrester ROSE and Mary BAIN / BAINE
Forrester and Mary had married in 1793 in Edinburgh, But sadly Mary BAIN died only a few yrs later in 1795. Then Forrester ROSE went onto marry a Mary THOMSON in 1798 in Inveresk and Musselburgh Parish.

But I am trying to work with the first wife Mary here (Mary BAIN / BAINE).
I believe her parents were Duncan BAIN / BAINE a doctor, and Ann ELDRED.
Ann ELDRED was registered in the Old Parish Registers for Edinburgh and she is buried in Greyfriers Cemetery with her daughter Ann (same headstone),
also at Greyfriers Cemetery is my Mary ROSE (nee BAIN / BAINE) that I've been chasing.

Also interestingly trying to sort out who an Isobel URQUHART is. Forrester ROSE had a son Bernard ROSE illegitimately with her. Her name at that time was Isobel BAIN (so I am wondering is she related to the same BAIN / BAINE family of Mary BAIN who had married Forrester ROSE. And this Isobel BAIN seems to have married at some time to a ?? URQUHART as she's mentioned in Forrester ROSE's will dated 1799 as being the mother of his son Bernard ROSE, who by this time Bernard ROSE was a Captain with the East India Company.

Forrester ROSE died in 1804.  He was of Olive Bank, Musselburgh but believe he may have died down in England somewhere???? As can find nothing on Scotlands People re death.
His wife Mary BAIN / BAINE has died in 1795 in Edinburgh.
his son Bernard ROSE died in 1801 jn Futtyghur, India.

his daughter Mary Delitia / Delicia BEDINGFELD (nee ROSE) died in 1828 in Catsfield, Sussex.

And any info on the parents of Mary BAIN / BAINE being dr. Duncan BAIN and Ann ELDRED.
Would very much appreciate any help offered here. As I am banging my head with this family.

Just to clarify - are your ancestors from Catfield (Norfolk) or Catsfield (East Sussex).  There is a big difference in terms of geographical location.  And it might make a difference as to where to look.

Nell

Catsfield (Sussex) - yes the relies do come from Norfolk as well. But this actual part of the family were in Catsfield, and other Sussex towns. Like they were married in Hastings, lived in Battle, Catsfield and some lived in Deal, Sandwich and Margate
In the county of Kent. If I have that right. But yes the rest of the family were Norfolk. But its these Southerners I am most interested in cos they are my 5th gr grandparents and there generations down from them

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Re: Baptism Lookup Please for a brickwall

Hi Edward,

Thanks for the quick reply and for the marriage details of Thomas Wright and Mary Eldred (which I'd not managed to find).

Thomas Wright and Mary registered 4 baptisms in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire: Richard Eldred Wright (1749), Richard Wright (1750), Thomas Wright (1752) and William Wright (1757). I believe Thomas was the only child to survive to adulthood (as he's the only one mentioned in the wills of his uncles).

Thomas Wright Jnr died in 1811 and his Will is the one that mentions his relation Mary Rose. It's a Prerogative Court of Canterbury Will which I can send you a copy of if you want?

Regards,

Dan

Hi Dan just came across this post, could I please ask if its possible for you to send me that will you talk above which mentions a Mary Rose (she was my 6 g grandmother)

Cheers

Midlothian / Ann Eldred BAINE - Greyfriars Burial Records
« on: Monday 04 July 22 10:25 BST (UK)  »
Hoping someone can help me. I'm in Australia and am trying to find the grave of Ann Eldred BAINE who is buried in Greyfriars, If anyone can please help me get details re location and a photo of the headstone as I haven't found any records anywhere online.
Her name was
Ann "ELDRED" BAINE
wife of Bernard BAINE (surgeon, London)
and mother of Ann BAINE
she died 8 Jul 1789.
and her daughter Ann died 17 Aug 1792.

She also had a daughter Mary ROSE who had married a Forrester ROSE in 1793, but I have been unable to find her anywhere except that I know this daugher died 1795 (mentioned in Scotlands People old Parish registers (Edinburgh) - has name spelt on Scotlands People as BAIN (but I think this is  typo as all other records point to BAINE.

Thanks in advance for any offers of help.

Thanks for that. Just so I am getting this correct. So if I am researching family who were living in Kent and Catsfield they would come under Canterbury is that correct. Sorry for my lack of knowledge. But am learning something new every day here.

I'm sorry I jumped on here and saw the post with regards to wills and was thinking am I missing something. I am in Australia and have no idea where to begin with regards to the wills in the UK. Where do I find these and is there anything online where I can possibly access (even an index) so I can work out whrere the wills are kept.
I was only aware of the National Archives UK which has some but obviously not all. And from there I have been lucky enough to be able to download some that have been digitised but others haven't. But I have ancestors who were living in Catsfiled / Battle area, Norfolk area, and am researching Ditchingham Manor, and also stumbled on something with regards to the family having been in hold of Kirklinton Hall. I had not heard of this one before but apparently my ancestor was from there.
But I'd really like to try and get my hands on some wills for my ancestors.

The surnames of all listed below were spelt BEDINGFELD / BEDINGFIELD
(it seems this family went from one spelling to another thruout there lives - gets kinda confusing)

Francis Philip1784-1864
Mary Delicia (nee Rose) 1793-1828
Francis Philip 1817-
Thomas Forrester 1818-1897
Charles de Longueville 1819-1859
Eldred Havers 1820-
Norman Bernard 1824-1894
Howard Downman 1825-1896
Mary Catherine STERKEY (nee Bedingfeld) 1816-

If anyone can send me in the right direction on where or how to get some info I'd be most greatful.

Sussex / Re: Headstone Photo Request - Delves of Sussex
« on: Thursday 30 June 22 05:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi HL,
Many thanks for that - I have a pic, already (thanks to another RC-er) of the stone over Rev. William Delves' grave, inside the church at Catsfield ... but wasn't aware that there were other burials there.

I've been trying to figure out whether he was married twice ... there are some records indicating his first wife was Elizabeth, but I have yet to find out where they married, and when she died.  William married again 16/5/1820 to Mary Susan Bedingfield, and they had a daughter, Mary, in 1822 ... but then William died on the 4/5/1823.  It looks like those names might include William's siblings &/or parents, which is great, because I don't have them as yet ...

I do, however, have a John Delves, b. 1819 and baptised in Wartling, son of John Delves Sr and his wife Mary/May Thorpe, ... I'd love to find the connection between John and Rev. William - apart from the coincidence that Rev. William married the parents of the girls who would become John's future two wives!

HI Deb, I just came upon this thread and was wondering if you could send me a copy of the picture of the headstone for the William DELVES (of Catsfield) who died in 1823. I am researching his 2nd wife Mary Susan BEDNGFIELD as well. Any info you can share would be most appreciated.

Thanks for this info on the marriage licences, I too were after them, and also found by going back 2-3 records I found the licences for my 6th great grandparents - Francis Philip BEDINGFELD and Catherine HAVERS (who is Lucretia's sister).

Cheers
