Lanarkshire / Re: Looking for birth of Mary and Henry Cairney
« on: Thursday 28 December 23 18:28 GMT (UK)  »
Wondering if any of you fine people could advise me how to find the marriage of my great great grandfather Henry Cairney and great great grandmother Mary Somervile.

Henry was from Kilwinning, Scotland and Mary was from Co. Down more specifically Anahilt.

Mary was 18 when she married Henry and this was her first marriage.  She "married" again in 1904 after Henry died in a terrible ironworks accident in Gartsherrie, Scotland.  Her second marriage was to a bigamist, Robert Cotter in Belfast.

Back to the marriage I am trying to find....Henry apparently married Mary in Belfast, December 1890.

I ha vent managed to get Mary Sommervilles first marriage to Henry Cairney which I am disappointed by.

According their childrens (4 children) birth registrations, Henry and Mary married in Belfast 30th December 1890.

I have had the GRO in Belfast do a search in and around that date without success and I have also personally tried irishgeneology.ie again without success.  Maybe they just didn't get married which would explain Marys use of her maiden name in the second marriage?

Would be very grateful for any assistance!

Ps
Henry was 22 years old at the time of marriage. His father was unknown as he was illegitimate. But his mother was called Mary Carnie.  His grandfather was Peter Cairnie.

Mary was 18 years old at the time of their marriage.  Her father was called John Somerville and her mother was Mary Shaw.

Mary and Henry were in Scotland in the 1891 Scottish Census. And their son, Henry, my great-grandfather was born in 1893 in Scotland.

Finally, the surname has been variously spelt as: Carney, Cairney, Kerney, Carnie, Cerney and Cairnie.

Thank you all!

Hey Gaffy,

Oh wow! Thank you very much.

This definitely has to be the right people. Henry and Margaret are my great-grandparents. James was my granda.  James my granda had a twin called John who died.  I have a death date of 27/01/1927. He was born 15 mins after my grandfather on the 22/09/1926.

What I now dont understand is why Henry was registered as John, which means there were 2 siblings called John (although the later John, my grandas twin died less than a year after birth).

I know about Henry's army record and his pension ledger from the army was addressed to 162 Cupar Street, I just didnt know the significance of that address.  I know at the time from Street Directories that a Thomas McQuitty (unknown surname to me) lived there but I couldnt square the circle.

But wow! Thank you for that! I cant believe the spelling mistakes of Carney and Ogilby!

Thank you Gaffy!

I find it odd there's no child named John after her 'father'?

Could she have been illegitimate & told her father was a Soldier especially if he wasn't around when she was growing up?

Annie

Hi Annie

Yes, very much a possibility.  But its definitely a branch of my tree I know very, very little about.

It looks like but not definite that all the children that she and Thomas had where named after the Annesley line BUT again I cannot be certain of that.

Father John - a soldier as Rosinish writes.

The witnesses are Robert Wilson and Sarah Wilson. Have you tried searching for these?

Hi heywood

Thanks to you and Annie.

Yes, I saw them and yes, I have tried searching but with little else on those names its very difficult with such common first names and surname.  :'(

Hi fellow genealogists  :)

I am hoping some of you clever people can help with a problem I have with this very common surname please!?

My 2nd great-grandmother Margaret Annesley nee Wilson is the main culprit....she is the first Wilson I have in that branch and apart from a little more info, it stops there.

Things I know:

Margaret Wilson born circa 1853/4:

Married to Thomas Annesley on the 23/12/1877 at St. Anne's Cathedral Belfast:

Thomas Annesley (1st Thomas died - followed by James, sadly within a week of each other and in different houses)

Hannah Annesley

Elizabeth Annesley

Born 29th April 1893

In 1901 and 1911 Thomas and Margaret lived in Derry Street, Shankill Road (an Annesley family stronghold).

Thomas Died in 1913
Margaret died 1923

As can be seen on headstone on above link.

My questions are, where was Margaret born in County Down? Who were her parents/siblings, etc?

Wilson is such a common name and I am struggling with this one!

Thanks

Gary

If his parents weren't married at the time of his birth (and informant gave true details) then father won't be on birth certificate unless he attended registration with chil'r mother. Have you searched under her maiden name?

Hi aghadowey
Thanks for the reply
Yes. I have tried searching using his mums maiden name Ogilby. No luck. :-(
