Durham Lookup Requests / Re: Durham Record Office - Tanfield & Lanchester PRs

In regards to the Surtees/Ward marriage I was wondering if anybody else had spotted this marriage bond dated 16 Jul 1716 a marriage between John Walton, gentleman & Sarah Surties widow of Lanchester.

There is a burial for a Robert Surtis on the 08 Mar 1716 of Lanchester.

On DRO website there is a note regarding the entry for Tanfield St Margaret which I would think was probably Roberts Parish. Maybe the difference in date was an error on Cuthbert Sharp's behalf. quote "[Note: this register was water-damaged beyond repair and is no longer extant, so this record is from Cuthbert Sharp's pre-1841 register extract held at the Durham Cathedral Library.]

The marriage bond is dated 11 August.

Hi, I saw your post regarding a Joseph Greenhow born on 15 Sept 1835 illegitimately to Elizabeth Greenhow and Joseph Jackson. I would be very interested if you have any further information on Joseph Jackson.

Elizabeth Greenhow was the daughter of William Greenhow & Ann Routledge they moved from Mungrisdale to Southwick Sunderland where Elizabeth married Thomas Carr and her Illegitimate son Joseph who was my great great grandfather and he became a master Mariner

Best regards,
                   Alan Turnbull

If you know when the child was born then from Sept 1911 the register also includes the mothers maiden name. If you have their marriage you will know the surname of both parties select a number of years and the district then just put in father and mothers maiden names and it will bring back the matches

I am new to rootschat. but I have been researching this same family and would be interested in cooperting in helping to sort it out!

Hi

I am seeking clarification of 2 records seen on joiner marriage index:-

1) Tanfield 15/5/1736 Wm Blackburn to Katherine Surtice

2) Medomsley 15/5/1737 William Blakeburn to Catherine Surtis

Either of the above could be right (or maybe they are one and the same!!)

- William could have been baptised at Ryton 20/4/1707 (Dad Luke)
- Katherine could have been baptised Medomsley 28/2/1716 Dad Robert)

As far as I know they had no daughters, possibly 5 sons - maybe this explains the long gap between children

Robert baptised Tanfield                         2/4/1738    no Mum given
Luke       "         Ryton                          14/8/1743     "       "
John       "         All Saints, Lanchester   22/4/1747  Mum Katherine
Thomas   "        All Saints, Lanchester   22/7/1750      "        "
Surtis      "        All Saints, Lanchester   13/7/1754       "  Catherine

Any assistance re this conundrum would be appreciated
Judith

I have been researching Surtees of Ebchester if I have got it right I have the Baptism of a Catherine Surtice/Surtees on the 28 Feb 1716 who went on to marry William Blackburn I was assuming that she was the daugther of Robert Surtees & Catherine Ward. But I have since seen that some family trees say that Robert Surtees who married in 1715 by license to Sarah Ward (I have various dates for the marriage) died in the same year. I have Ebchester burial records and there is indeed a Robert Surtees that dies in 1715 but he is buried on the 8th of March 1715 which is at least 5 months after his burial. I wonder. I wonder if any one can help with an explanation? Thanks

Hi

Can anyone help me connect these families to my tree please.
I have a Cuthbert Surtees born 1580 Ebchester, and I have the Surtees family of Milkwell Burn and Hamsterley Hall on my tree.  I have also information of the Redworth Surtees, I am trying to connect the Redworth family to my tree (if there is one)

Can anyone help

Many thanks
Dawn
