So, from the marriage record, John Adamson was the father of Agnes Adamson. And the 15 July 1827 birthdate for Charles Smith is obviously correct. Thank you again.  Bill

Thank you again, Monica. I'll have to check on the death date for Charles. I don't think it was exact (just about), so I'm sure you're correct with him passing before 1851.

Yes, that is definitely them. Agnes and Elisabeth (both age 9 months in the census) were twins. Agnes eventually married William Patterson and moved with him to Baltimore, Maryland where they started a florist business. Agnes and William were my great-grandparents (from my mother Dorothy and her mother Charlotte). I was born and grew up in Baltimore. Very exciting! Thank you so much!

Hi Monica - That certainly looks like the family. On the family tree that you linked, the birth date for the son (Charles Smith) of Agnes Adamson is 15 JULY 1827. I have "about 1829" so it's pretty close and looks more exact than what I have. Thank you again, so much!  Bill

Thank you, Lodger. I think my great-grandfather, William Paterson, lived in the vicinity of Galashiels before he emigrated to Baltimore, Maryland in the 1870s with a brother and started a florist business. He added a "t" somewhere along the line to become William Patterson, and his daughter - Charlotte (Patterson) Farley - was my maternal grandmother. Thank you again for all of your work.

Thanks a lot for your help. I don't have birth or death dates for Elspeth Ker and her husband. John Paterson (Elspeth's son) was born in 1793 (no death date).

I have that Agnes Adamson was born in 1806. Her husband (Charles Smith) was born in 1806 and died in 1859. Her son (Charles Smith) was born in 1829 (no death date), and he was married to Catherine Forsan (born in 1830).

All in Scotland (maybe around Galashiels). That's all I have.

Lodger - Thank you so much for the photographs. I really appreciate it. Sonoma Bill

P.S.  Do you know how far the cemetery is from the town of Galashiels?

Thank you all so much for all of your quick and informative responses. Wow! I'm really blown away by all of the good information.

I just finished looking at the Houliston family tree (on Helen Bearup) that was included in Monica's response above. That is absolutely amazing.

I know I need to confirm all of the information, but it provides a great starting point - and it looks like it's very well researched.

Again, many thanks!

P.S.  I have two other outstanding questions where I've run into a brick wall:

1. Elspeth Ker (married to John Paterson in Scotland, with a son named John Paterson who is my 4th g-grandfather)
2. Agnes Adamson (married to Charles Smith in Scotland, with a son named Charles Smith who is my 3rd g-grandfather)

Scotland / Helen Bearup (Scotland) married to Thomas Hislop Paterson

Hello - New member. I'm trying to find information on Helen Bearup who was married (2nd wife) to Thomas Hislop Paterson (my great-great-grandparents). I know Thomas' parents were John Paterson and Isabella Hislop. Any information on the ancestors of Helen Bearup would be greatly appreciated. Sonoma Bill
