Emily Coole was my great-grandmother too. My grandmother was Ellen Lovell. I can remember visiting her in Dulwich, but she died when I was eight. Peter Thompson

Wendy - thanks for that!

This looks like the right Emily Hill.  It looks like her sister Elizabeth married Josh Hetherington, born Rotherham 1851.  I can find them in 1881 in Bramwell? Street, Sheffield with a selection of kids.

Any luck with James?  As today was the last day before Christmas, we did a bit of searching at work but no luck.  Perhaps he gave a false name or had gone on a 'gap year' before settling down or was in prison??  Do convicts get listed in censuses??

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1871 - James Armitage Flower

I'm trying to locate James Armitage Flower in the 1871 England census.

I can find him living with his parents (before his marriage in 1873?) in 1851 and 1861:

Back Street, Thorne, Yorkshire
Robert Flower, 1803, Thorne
Jane, 1807, Aldbrough?
Joe A, 1838, Thorne
Jane Ann, 1840, Thorne
Ruth, 1841, Thorne
John, 1843, Thorne
William, 1845, Thorne
James A, 1850, Thorne

In 1873 he married Emily Hill (1850, Thorne) and can be found in 1881:

Bramwell Street, Sheffield
James Armitage Flower, 1849, Thorne
Emily, 1850, Thorne
Arthur, 1875, Thorne
Gertrude, 1877, Thorne
Lilian, 1881, Thorne

I can't find either James Armitage Flower or Emily Hill in 1871 - help!

Thanks Daisy,

I already knew about the other children.

Thanks for the detective work, Ancestry list Thomas as 'Gentle Thomas', who sounds a nice friendly bloke but it doesn't make it easy to find him.  How did you find him?

Welsh lady -

I have got Thomas Gentle in 1841, 51, 61, 71, 81 and 1901, I wanted 1891 to complete the set!

Thomas is my Great great grandfather, his daughter Ellen (1862) is my Great grandmother (she had married in 1884).  I can find her OK in 1891.

Thanks

Peter

Thanks, sem73, that's useful - but what about all the others?

I'm trying to find this family in 1891:

Thomas Gentle, 1837, Abbots Langley
Martha or Amelia, 1840, St Albans
Amelia, 1864, St Albans
Selina(?), 1865, St Albans
Emily Jane, 1867, St Albans
Thomas, 1869, St Albans
Florence, 1875, St Albans

In 1881 they lived at New England Street, St Albans and in 1901 they lived at West View Road, St Albans but they seem to have vanished in 1891.

Thanks!

Valda,

This seems suspicious! I have:

Alfred Coole, 1845, Bristol (Cordwainer in Bristol in 1861)
Elizabeth, 1847, Bristol
Alfred, 1868, Abersychan
Emily, 1870, Abersychan

These dates, birth locations and Alfred's occupation seem to suggest they are the same family. I wonder whether there was some reason for them to give a false name?  By 1881 Alfred had died (although a daughter Bertha was born in 1878) and Elizabeth and the children were back in Bristol (listed as COLE).

Amazing - a fantastic job!  Not only John and Emily, but also John's brother Joseph and his wife Mary Ann AND Joseph's neice Florence Wheeler!

How did you find LORELL - do you use wild cards or dogged perseverance?

The sad thing is that I had found Joseph already - but not scrolled down the page after finding him at the top.

Thanks again

Peter

PS LORELL doesn't work for 1870!
