Yes. Thanks. That's why I couldn't find the ship's logs for HMS Somers. The name had reverted back to HMS Barbara!

Armed Forces / Help with deciphering handwriting on Royal Navy record
« on: Wednesday 04 June 25 10:11 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to decipher some handwriting on my 5x Great-grandfather's Royal Navy record. I can work out the "supr list no 165" refers to supernumeraries list number 165 but I cannot work out what the next column to the right says. If anyone could help that would be great.

Thanks,

Andrew

I'm hoping someone can help with this. It's a photo I've had for a while which used to belong to my late grandmother. There are no other photos I've ever seen of my Great-grandparents and I'm not sure it's them. They were from Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. The couple in the photo look like they're in their 60s, which if true would date the photo to the late 1930s.

Can't find her in the 1881 census. There's a marriage in 1887 in Dudley for a Mary Ann Haycock. Don't know whether that's her though.

His wife and the surviving child are then in the 1871 census in Wolverhampton with her parents but there is no sign of him.

Is she down as married or something else?

What is her status on the next census?

I'm looking for any clues regarding a James Haycock bapt. 1844 Harborne to Frederick and Maria. He and his brothers were sometimes known by the surname Mander(s) or Haycock Mander as his mother was Maria Mander. He appears in the 1851/1861 census at home  with family in Aston, Birmingham. I've discovered him in the ADM-158-49-43 admiralty description books signing up for the Navy with his brother John Haycock in March 1863 at age 18 but he was invalided out after two years. In 1866 he marries Mary Ann Tolley in Wolverhampton:

James Haycock Mander
Marriage Age   23
Record Type   Marriage
Birth Date   abt 1843
Residence Place   Middle Vauxhall
Marriage Date   25 Dec 1866
Marriage Place   Wolverhampton, St Mark, Staffordshire, England
Father   Fredrick Haycock Mander
Spouse   Mary Ann Tolley
Religion   Anglican
Page number   136

They have two daughters Ann L Haycock b. 1867 and Emma Jane b. 1868. His wife and the surviving child are then in the 1871 census in Wolverhampton with her parents but there is no sign of him.

Wolverhampton
Sub-registration district   Wolverhampton Western
ED, institution, or vessel   31
Household schedule number   191
Piece   2935
Folio   24
Page number   41

I cannot locate any death or burial records for him in the areas of Wolverhampton or Birmingham.

Thanks,

Buffalito

« on: Tuesday 24 October 23 17:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I wondering whether someone could lookup a baptism/birth record for a Mary (Ann) Thompson born in Dromore parish, Co. Down circa 1815 if possible?

Thanks in advance.
