Devon / Re: Where is Studley, Devon?
« on: Sunday 27 July 25 17:48 BST (UK)  »
I have studied all Thomases with baptismal records in Somerset and Devon, from 1760 to 1774.
My Thomas married Frances Broadbeard (bp. 1779, parents John and Elizabeth) in North Petherton in 1798 and they had 7 children:
John, Elizabeth, Mary, Thomas, Sarah, James and William, so I have tried looking at naming patterns too.

Apart from the age, the Thomas baptised 1760 in N. Petherton seemed a good option, but absolutely no-one was ever called Catherine (until my sister 6 generations later - and that was because of the film "Wuthering Heights" that appeared shortly before her birth !!)
In this case, Thomas would have been 81 already in 1841 (rounded down to 75?), and at death in 1853 (I have the certificate) 93, not 89 (but perhaps his son, the informant, didn't know). At marriage he would have been 38 with the last child born when he was 61. All possible, but...

There are not many Thomases baptised in Somerset in the right period:

1760 Thomas son of John and Catherine in North Petherton
1772 Thomas son of Thomas and Mary in Timberscombe
1768 Thomas son of William and Sarah in Wiveliscombe
1774 Thomas son of Samuel and Catherine in Brompton Ralph

1769 Thomas son of John in Rose Ash, Devon

The Thomas of Timberscombe really isn't old enough considering the ages, even making allowances, at the censuses and death, nor the one at Brompton Ralph.

Which leaves the ones in Wiveliscombe and Rose Ash.

The Wivvy  Thomas has an acceptable naming pattern (John and Elizabeth = maternal grandparents, Sarah = paternal grandmother, Thomas = father, James = paternal uncle, William = paternal grandfather [though surely pat. grandfather before paternal uncle?] - except for Mary.

I've been looking at John who married Anne Lyddon in Rose Ash in 1768 - no-one named Anne in the descendance either! But the ages are closer and perhaps Thomas thought he was older than he was !!!

So what else can I try? There are no wills - they were labourers, though at marriage Thomas is shown as a husbandman.

Can I find a connection somehow between the 1760 baptism in N. Petherton and Stoodleigh/Studley? Or the Wivvy baptism and Stoodleigh/Studley?

Probably a brick wall I'll never break down...

"Hi, for completeness the is also a Stoodleigh, in West Buckland in Devon. Stoodleigh Barton, Middle Stoodleigh etc."

Thank you David for that information. I"ll have a look in due course. Don't think it would be the Farm near Frome, but I'll see.

Thank you for the replies so far; I had already investigated Stoodleigh a bit, but found no records, and knew the whereabouts of the Compass Inn - used to drive past in our ancient car every couple of weeks, as a small child, to visit my grandfather in Bridgwater in the late 50s. I suppose my Thomas lived in a cottage thereabouts.
The map and tithe records are interesting: probably John and Thomas, the eldest two sons. My line is through James the third son.

Devon / Where is Studley, Devon?
« on: Friday 25 July 25 18:17 BST (UK)  »
My 3x great grandfather, Thomas Yeandle/Yendole/Yendall/Yendel features in the 1841 census in North Petherton, Somerset, with his wife Frances. They live in an area called "Compass". He is supposedly 75 and "born in county". (So is absolutely everyone on the page... )

In the 1851 census he now lives in the High Street, North Petherton, Somerset and is 85 which gives a birth around 1765/1766. This time he/the enumerator claims he was born in Studley, Devon

Does anyone have access to the baptism records for this place? Is it Stoodleigh, do you think? If so, are the parish registers for Stoodleigh available on line anywhere? What parish might it have been part of/related to in the mid 1760s?

Thanks for any ideas/help. I'm trying to confirm his parents, obviously.

Devon / Re: Bond family history

John Bond married Grace Pinch in Bodmin in 1812 (Familysearch). She came from St Kew, Cornwall.
I think I saw a child given the second 'Christian' name of Pinch, who would be a sibling of Samuel.

It's Trinity Sunday - obviously Easter must have been very early that year for Trinity Sunday to fall in May! It's celebrated the Sunday after Whitsunday/Pentecost.

"William Brooks, a British man who lived in France during the 1800s, "

How do you know that? Do you have an address?

" Harry Brooks, born in London around 1864 (we believe his mother Eliza would’ve been ~34 at the time)"

So William was still in London, presumably, in about 1864?

"Alice Brooks, born in Rocquencourt, France in 1889 (we’ve found her record already in the Yvelines Departmental Archives)"

Could she be Harry's child and William's grandchild?

I already noticed that Eliza would have been far too old to be her mother in 1889, never mind that you think William was dead in 1887 .
Presumably tha record you have found names the father, at least ? Please give the details or ask for them to be transcribed/translated.

<<I found a Sarah Faustin, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Faustin in Petherton, Somerset.>>

Is that North Petherton (nr Bridgwater) or South Petherton (nr Ilminster and Crewkerne)?

"But does anyone have any suggestions as to why the place was stated for this baptism, but not for any others on this page?"

Because the other entries refer to families who lived in the parish of Uttoxeter whereas this child was born elsewhere, perhaps in the grandparent's native hamlet or village? 8 miles was not far to walk in the 1600s !
Or perhaps the other way round: the parents lived in Wood-end and the grandparents (where the child was born) lived in Uttoxeter. The child was a bit sickly and was baptised within a few days?
