Family History Beginners Board / Re: Did Folk use different churches in 1700s?

As regards baptisms of their children people often walked to the neighbouring village if that is where the vicar was officiating that day rather than necessarily waiting till the vicar was in their own village church.
Lots of "absentee" rectors/vicars too, who had been given the living but didn't do much !

Agree that most couples married in the bride's church.

Don't think people actually changed denomination easily, unless an Anglican man was marrying a Catholic woman or vice versa. Frought with difficulties in the 1700s.

Thank you Sandra for this.

I persevered with the link several times while Ancestry "knew" I was signed in and it wouldn't work for me. Got the "problem" message each time.

Then I "signed out" and used the link, which opened a page with the same offer at the reduced price. First I did as you said and logged in (pressed the button "Already got an account?") but it still wouldn't work, so, having made sure I was still signed out, I tried again. This time I created a new account with a different email address and password...and it worked! And I have received a confirmation email.

So thank you very much again for your advice.

I did wonder if Ancestry had "twigged" by checking the IP address (though mine is different every time so OH says, since I always turn the laptop fully off). We'll see if it works again next year ! Perhaps I'll have to use the original email address again and devise yet another password!

Anyway thank you again.

Hello fellow rootschatters,
I cancelled my Ancestry membership about a month ago, and became a 'registered guest', and hoped to rejoin using Sandra's special link. But it won't work for me (though it did a year ago).

When I tried the link it looked OK until I clicked on the tab at the bottom of the page to "buy" then a message appeared saying "There appears to be a problem with your purchase. Please try again later"

If I just open Ancestry.co.uk in the normal way there is a problem in that I can't subscribe by clicking on any "subscribe" tab - I just get a blank page! (The only way I can even see any normal prices is by going to the "my account" page and clicking on "gift membership" ). This has been the case since Saturday last.

Anyone else got the same problem?

Somerset / Re: Hannah Charles

Have spent some time studying the maps in the reference, though I come from Somerset.
I'd say there is no doubt about the clarity of 'Somersetshire' on the clip.
The only possibility I can see for the town/village/farm name as the POB would be Evercreech spelt as Heverchre(c)he.

"I am still puzzled by the Somerset birthplace name given in the 1851 census."

Could you send a snip with the Somerset place name on it? I can't seem to access Ancestry at the minute/see an image of the original.

Could not the two Elizabeth Keightleys simply be cousins, offspring of two brothers?

I haven't had time to study this but frequently brothers used the same names for daughters, especially if one of the grandmothers was Elizabeth.

Could be something like Crowthorp but please post a larger snip so we can see how the writer forms his letters.
