Hi,

No my grandfather didn’t go with his mother Mary Emma into the Birmingham workhouse, according to my mum he rarely spoke about his childhood and never really knew his mother as she was 24 when she died. Mary Emma’s sister then took him to be raised with her in Birkenhead and he stayed there until he was about 34 years old, he then returned back to Birmingham in 1949 with his wife and 2 year old daughter Jean.

Thank you again for all the research, you’ve been so helpful and I really am very grateful, I’d like to try and find that photo of Mary Emma and Arley/Harley so that I can show my mum as she has no photos of her grandfather. Mary Emma died in the Birmingham workhouse in 1919 but not sure how she ended up there, only thing we have come up with is that when her husband Arley went off to war she couldn’t financially look after herself and young son ( my grandfather) so had no choice but to enter a workhouse, where she died aged 24, and leaving my grandfather to be raised by her twin sister Kathleen in Birkenhead.

Thank you for all that information, I really am grateful. My grandfather was also Harley Turner born in 1914 to Arley/Harley Turner and Mary Emma McGrath, Mary Emma died in 1919 and my grandfather aged 5 was raised by Mary’s twin sister Kathleen in Birkenhead Liverpool. We also have a connection to Norah Turner ( Lady Norah Docker) but I’ve not been able to find out the connection. My mum remembers as a child my grandfather taking about Lady Docker but can’t remember who she was in connection to my grandfather.

I really appreciate the information you have provided.

I am looking for information about my great grandmother Mary Emma McGrath, she had one child Harley with Arley Turner of Aston Birmingham. Mary Emma was born in 1895 and died in Birmingham Workhouse in 1919, she had a twin sister Kathleen who adopted my grandfather after the death of her twin sister.

Any information no matter how small would be appreciated.

I have only just starting gathering information regarding family history and came across your message. My mother is the granddaughter of Arley/Harley Turner and was 14 years old when he passed away. He was married to Mary Emma Mcrath but what we know is that that had one child Harley Turner ( my grandfather) and she died at the very young age of 24 years old, my grandfather was  adopted by her twin sister Kathleen McGrath/Dodd as a baby and was bought up in Birkenhead. My great grandfather Arley died in 1961 aged 70, and his son Harley died in 1989 aged 74. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. Sadly we don't know much about our family tree/history as we've just started looking into it. Unfortunately my mother doesn’t recognise any of the names that you mentioned. My sister wondered if Alfred Llewellyn Turner could be my grandads Uncle or Grandfather. Do you think there could be a family connection?
