Seems to have disappeared. Bookmarked link as well as general Googling brings up a "The connection was reset" message. Anyone have any info? Thanks

The Common Room / Re: ** POSTEMS on FreeBMD **

The official Death Index has my gg grandfather recorded as dying at the age of 37 which did not match the info I already had for him. For a long time I put off ordering the death certificate because of this but because the initial of the middle name matched his, decided to take a chance. I got lucky it was him. The details on the certificate including the name of his son who was the informant as well as his unusual middle name matched my info. The certificate showed his actual age as 67 which is more like what it should have been. I put a Postem on the FreeBMD entry (which is an exact copy of the official record) showing his age as written on the  certificate.

The Common Room / Re: FAMILY TREE MAKER to be discontinued!

I still use FTM 2007 and do not have my tree on Ancestry. However, because that version is no longer linked to the Ancestry database, a function I found very useful, have been considering up grading to get that functionality back. Am glad now that I dithered because I did not really like the latest versions. Although I could carry on using FTM 2007 as a stand alone am worried about the lack of software support.

The Common Room / Re: Divorce in 1914

My great grandfather divorced my great grandmother in 1918 on the grounds of her adultery. He was  a worker in a cement factory at the time. I obtained the divorce papers from TNA and according to them he was granted financial assistance with the divorce because he was a "Poor Person".

Don't restrict yourself to parent's wills. Wills written by childless aunts and uncles can be goldmines. I had a couple of such wills which confirmed familiy groups that I had tentatively sorted out using parish records.

stanmapstone - thanks.

I find this a fascinating topic and I do wonder how many illegitimate births were in fact registered as legitimate and further, given the alleged stigma attached, why so many were registered as illegitimate. I don't believe that people were more law abiding in the past (read the newspapers and Church Courts/Poor Law records etc) and would, if they thought they could get away with it, break the law to save face.

Maybe the widespread belief about fallen daughters being shown the door or bringing shame upon the family is wrong? Certainly the girls who had illegitimate children in my family were not and went on to marry and have families. They lived in small villages/towns so their past would not have been a secret.

If a Miss Smith turned up to register a birth calling herself Mrs Smith and saying the father, not present, was Mr Smith would she get away with it? This is assuming that Miss Smith was not known to the Registry Office staff.

I have examples of "made up" father's names being entered on marriage certificates so seems not an problem there.

The Common Room / Re: FindMyPast subscription £10 for year
« on: Saturday 13 December 14 19:45 GMT (UK)  »
I am unable to access the records and have sent them a message but as it is the weekend I can't do any research. >:(

It quite clearly states that my subscription runs until the 3rd March 2016 - that is what I have paid for.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Yes, I have been unable to use the site for a couple of days. I did try for the £10 offer but now have my money back however my existing sub runs to July 2015. Have emailed them to see what is going on.
