Europe / Re: Ponickau / Ponikau

Horst Ponikau was born in Germany in 1921, served in the army, became a professional ice skater and in European skating circles was jokingly called 'Mr Minagery'  (Horse-Pony-Cow).

I recognize the last name - was he related to the Ponikau's involved in skating in Nova Scotia?

The Common Room / Re: Phil Taylor - Ice Skater

Hi, my great grandfather, Sidney Charlton, used to skate with Phil Taylor. I have photos of them together. Sid also joined the Canadian Army. They seemed to have had a double act on ice, which they performed away from competitions, in theatres across England. Sid had a colourful career, including skating on stilts and barrel jumping, instructing in Switzerland, and at Streatham Ice Rink where he was floor manager when it opened in the 30s.

Will be messaging you privately - have some questions and info on Sidney!
