Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / look up request llanvihangel crucorney
« on: Tuesday 08 January 13 14:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Would anyone be able to find a record of the family of Ada Smith? She was born in Llanvihangel Crucorney on 8 February 1897. I have a feeling she was a farmer's daughter but do not know any family names other than her father may have been John Smith. It is possible she may be in Ross Urban, Herefordshire on the 1901 census?
If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.
thanks

Hello Baroni

How wonderful to find a member of the family!. James was my great great great grandfather. My father is the son of Henry Baroni Richard who married Ella Thompson. We have found out some details of Alfred and his unfortunate demise. My dad has tried to find out details of the court case but so far not much beyond the newspaper coverage of the time. He wondered whether Alfred's brother John had a hand in it somewhere.

After the family's relocation to London we know that Claude worked in a sweet shop, among other things. My dad has some recollection of Claude. We have been trying to find out his DOD.

We have been to see James Baker's grave in Wotton. One mystery is that the DOB on his gravestone is given as 1801 ( stone engraved by his son John Burgoyne Baker, so ought to be correct) but all records seem to point to him being born in 1800 to William Baker and  Betty Grafton. I haven't been able to sort this one out as yet.

Claude had 6 children that we know of. Presumably you are descended from one of his daughters? William died in WW1 and my dad has tried to piece together his war movements and many years ago went to France to see some of the battle sites. If you have any further memories of the family I would love to put you in touch with him, if you were agreeable. He has put together a family history which may be of interest to you.

Hi Anna

No I don't have any certificates. Ada was my father in law's mother and he doesn't have anything. Apparently there was a split in the family and so we don't have any of the usual info. All he knows is that Ada was born in Ross, probably the eldest child, and had three brothers. He knows that she was older than her husband by a few years and he (husband Cecil Phillips)was born in 1900.

Thanks
Moss

I like your little penguin Mum, that's exactly how I feel about this one!

I think I've managed to trace Annie on the 1881, living with Lewis and Nancy Williams, Small Brook, Kingstone,Herefd. She's definitely not a Lavinia.

Thanks for looking guys.

Hi

Thanks for that. This is turning into a real puzzle for me. I know for certain that the parents were James and Annie Smith (I have seen the gravestone and know they were born 1856 and 1866 respec.)

I also know for sure that Ada was born in Ross but not the year. Like you, the only Ada from Ross I found was b. in 1895.

The only thing I can think of is if they were out of county perhaps Monmouth? Not sure where to go from here ???

Hello all

Would anyone be able to find Ada Catherine Smith b. 1895 Ross, and her parents James and Annie Smith (nee Williams)? I have tried to find Ada before but didn't then know her parents' names so have not had much success.

Ada had brothers Thomas, Walter and Edwin. I think they were all younger than her but don't know their DOBs. James and Annie eventually lived near Bacton so I'm hoping that they stayed in county for the 1901.

If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.
Many thanks

Hi

The 1811 marriage date for Joseph and Mary would tie in well with the arrival of the children. Ann was the eldest born in 1812. The 1851 census has her unmarried, aged 39 and living with her parents. She was a schoolmistress.

could this be our Joseph & Mary?   They had children baptised (Susannah, Elizabeth & Martha - but no record of Mary).

Our Joseph and Mary had the 8 children we've already mentioned, is Susannah another one or do these 3 belong somewhere else? There is a Maria but no Mary. Not sure about Battman, will dig around :)

I don't know that I can help much. If the sampler was made in 1796 then it couldn't have been done by Mary Player wife of Joseph as she was born c. 1791 so would have been too young.

Joseph's mother or a sister could have been a Mary but I have not been able to trace his earlier family. He was born in Henbury, Glos. c. 1781. I have made a note and if I find out anything I'll get back to you.

Incidentally I only knew of 5 children for Joseph and Mary. I have Sarah, Martha, Ann, John and Maria. Do you know the other 3?

Regards
