FH Documents and Artefacts / Re: medal box?

Thanks for that Ruskie. The little German I know says it something to do with Easter Monday - date of 1924 and yes, it has been stuck on and nailed into the lid.

DC - I should have given more context and didn’t think until now. The medals were for my great uncles Jonas Crossley and John Crossley who died in WW1. D probably stands for Dorothy who was their sister and her son gave me the medals. This makes sense, but couldn’t be a Freemason box or club for men. It also looks very masculine for some sort of jewellery box, though I could be wrong.

Hi,

Have some family WW1 medals in the attached box. Does anyone know what this box was used for in the past?

Thank you

MJ

Thanks Alan, yeah I knew that, but he wasn’t on the ship when they were rescued, but told stories about rescuing the royal family. My guess is he heard stories from other ship mates that were on HMS Marlborough at the time. I also found a record that said the ship did go back in April 1920 to Sochi to help refugees. It didn’t say if they were royal refugees or not. I wonder if other royals were helped later. He always said they rescued Prince Alexei and they had to hide him below deck as nobody could find out he was alive. However, that must have been a story he liked to tell as they have now proved he died along with his family.

Thank you Jim. That’s great to know. So then it must be Susannah who was born 1844.

Thank you, Tony.

Still perplexed, as he said he was in Russia but clearly not. I wonder if other areas extends to Turkey with the Greco-Turkish War and the Anglo Turkish War, which looks like he was a part of onboard HMS Marlborough and HMS Argus.

Thank you for this. I just found the medal roll. Still doesn't make sense as he was only training still at the end of the war.

I guess that's true about the memories of others. There is an article about his brother's funeral in Fen 1920 and it states Fred Crossley is in the navy and on active service in Russia. I have checked all the ships he was on and he only seems to be in Constantinople, around other parts of Turkey, Greece, Malta but no Russia.

P.S as a side note to the medals, he also said he was onboard HMS Marlborough when they rescued the Russian royal family. He told me that himself when I was a boy, but they were rescued April 1919 and he didn't go on the ship until December 1919. I am jsuy a bit confused by his stories.
