Devon Lookup Requests / William RICH marriage in Bovey Tracey c1790
« on: Tuesday 27 May 08 00:54 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please look up a marriage for me in Bovey Tracey area between William Rich and Jane (possibly Diamond or Daymond). On c1851 Jane is in Teigngrace widowed age 82 but haven't yet found her on c1841. I have found 5 children born between 1798 - 1812 in Bovey Tracey and have also found a child to William and Mary so the marriage to Jane could be his second marriage.
Thanks for your help

The address on c1881 is 85 Midwood St, Widnes with father working in a soap factory. Looking at the map looks near to Morrisons is in Widnes so definately not Garston end. Children are Thomas (10), Alice (14), Frances (7) and Mary J (3) Coleman. We did find Alice in c1891 working in service in Manchester.
It was really the story of the orphanage and B&M I was trying to find information on.

Interesting to see you Garstonites are having as much difficulty as I was researching this story. I was sure that if a big company like B&M had an orphanage it would be recorded somewhere. I didn't expect to find the children in the orphanage in 1891 as they would probably be too old. What was also puzzling was that the family originally from Flint but living in Widnes 1881 would have been sent to Liverpool when orphaned and sent to work in the match factory.

Lancashire / Bryant and May Liverpool

Does anyone have any information on an orphanage attached to the Bryant and May Factory in Liverpool. An elderly gentleman I know was told by his father that he and his sisters were sent to work there when their parents died. I have found his father age 8 living with his sisters and parents in Widnes on c1881 but cannot find any trace of the family in 1891. I have checked the list of Liverpool orphanages and other sources and cannot find any reference to it. Can anyone help?

I taught in the local school in the late 1970s and through the 80s and had all the children from the Hall Lane farms. As far as I know the farms were owned by the families who worked them. As far as I remember the family at Home farm and the one next door were related and the other farm was owned by the son of the farmer on Gorsey Lane. I still see the mum from time to time will ask her next time I bump into her.

Anne

As far as I know the farm is still there I used to teach the children from Home farm. I can give you directions but don't know if you can get down to it. There are 3 farms down the lane and you used to have to go through a series of gates.
