weeabi, I think your best bet is to join the Orkney Family History Society, after the part-clearance of North Ronaldsay some of the folk moved to Eday, my own people amongst them.

Bests,
Skoosh.

Thank you, I'm doing it now!

Orkney / Groats of Orkney
« on: Tuesday 14 January 20 12:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I have recently taken a 23andme test which shows I have 3% German & French ancestry. Not a lot, but having previously done research on the 'Groat' surname it seems it originated in Germany.
I am very interested in finding out about more of my Groat lineage but feel I've hit a bit of a brick wall.

My great grandmother was born Annie Twatt Groat in Eday, Orkney, on February 4th 1927.
Her parents were Thomas Groat and Christina Anderson Groat nee Cormack. They married October 4th, 1918 at Clunie Church.

Annie is long dead and I am not in contact with any of her descendants (apart from my father who is not in contact with them either) so I don't know where Thomas & Christina were born or when, makes it difficult to search records for them!

I'd appreciate if anyone had any info on them or any advice, thanks so much!

Hi There is a Jane Drever married James Groat 1892 in Orkney. Jane Drever death in Orkney 1964. I looked on Scotlands people no Driver , could it be a spelling error.

Hi, thanks so much for your help! Was it scotlandspeople you found Drever on? Certainly could be a spelling error. Will have a look in a few days as quite busy at moment!

Thank you all, good to know I'm not going mad! Will continue the search for a Jean Driver.
I've had a bit of spare time recently and I've been looking up lots of birth/marriage certificates, some of which I'm struggling to read.
Is it ok if I post them here rather than starting a new thread?
Very much appreciated, thank you!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Maiden name??
« on: Tuesday 10 December 19 15:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone! Looking for a bit of help on deciphering my great great grandmother's maiden name. Her name is Jean Groat, but I can't make out the maiden name! I thought it looked like 'Driver' or 'Dever' but I've done some thorough searches on ScotlandsPeople and the only marriage that comes up that could be my great great grandparents, the name is Jean Moodie, but I don't think the writing on this looks anything like 'Moodie'!

If it helps, they were from Shetland. Thank you  :)
