the boswells some of this family were gipsies/romany people. let me know BRIEFLY what you want me to search.EXACT details, please, Margaret.

Hi Margaret,

Thank you for all of this information. I apologize for the delay in responding; I just noticed that you had sent me additional information.

With your great assistance and research, I am starting to break through some of these long-standing brickwalls.

I have something else that I am puzzling over with regard to one of my Goodes ancestors. I have Thomas Goodes (1750-1830), married to his second wife, Elizabeth Ayers/Ayres (1754-1820). They are my 4x great-grandparents. I have his father listed as a William Goodes (born 1711 with no death date). I have had no spouse listed for William, yet another brick wall.

I have some matches on Ancestry who I notice are now listing a Mary Lucas as wife to William Goodes. I have not seen any source information listed for that marriage. I am very hesitant to add her name as a direct ancestor without any proof. I believe William is also out of Little Stukeley or Great Gidding in Huntingdonshire.

Also, my 3x great-grandfather, Thomas John Goodes (1797 - 1845), is the ancestor who left Great Gidding to emigrate to Rootstown, in Portage County, Ohio. His wife, per my records, was Ann Buswell
(1795 - 1867) out of Bythorn, Huntingdonshire. For some reason, they named their son, my 2x great-grandfather, William Boswell Goodes. This has caused a lot of confusion. :-)

Again, thank you so very much for your assistance and fabulous research. It is greatly appreciated.

Jennifer

Huntingdonshire / Buswell/Boswell and Goodes families of Huntingdonshire
« on: Friday 08 November 19 18:44 GMT (UK)  »
So, I have some direct ancestral connections to Huntingdonshire via my great-great-great grandparents, Thomas John Goodes (born 4/27/1797 in Great Gidding, died 9/15/1845 in Rootstown, Ohio, USA). He married an Ann Buswell/Boswell? of Bythorn - born 5/10/1795 in Bythorn, died 8/5/1867 in Rootstown.

I have some confusion about whether the surname is Boswell or Buswell. My great-great grandfather (their son) is listed as William "Boswell" Goodes, born 1833 in Wilmington, Delaware, USA.

I have scant information on the Buswells of Huntingdonshire, other than Ann's parents were a John Buswell and a Mary (maiden name unknown). I would love to know more about that family line and where it derives.

Additionally, I know little about the Goodes family, other than Thomas John's parents were a Thomas Goodes and an Elizabeth Ayers, of Little Stukely and Elton, respectively. My understanding also is that Goodes is a fairly unusual surname.

I would really love to get beyond these brick walls on my mother's maternal lines. She did extensive research prior to computers and the internet, but I think she got stuck as well. I think she would be excited if I am able to finally get some answers on her family history.

Thank you!

Lincolnshire / Cook/Cooke and associated lineage Great Sturton, Lincolnshire
« on: Friday 08 November 19 18:39 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my Cook/Cooke lineage further back in England, prior to 1700. It appears that this family line (my mother's maternal line via *her* maternal grandfather) goes back to Great Sturton in Lincolnshire.

It looks like the Cook/Cooke family had deep roots in this area.

My late mother did traditional genealogical research (she was an art historian), and I have many records and notes that she kept. I believe that she also had a contact in Great Sturton. This was almost 30 years ago. I also know that much has changed in the field since then, especially with more documentation being digitized, etc...

More specifically, I would love to find out more about the Cook/Cooke connection to Lincolnshire, and Great Sturton. I don't have any information prior to my earliest ancestor, Richard Cooke, so it would also be interesting to learn where this family originated and how they made a living in Great Sturton. At some point down the line, obviously one of the long line decided to emigrate to North America in the 19th Century.

Also, is there anything of interest I should know about the offshoot lines (marriages to Cooks/Cookes) that are worth researching further? The Ranyards, Holdings, Ablewhites, etc?

I am starting to dive in to some websites for research that are more specific to the U.K. - including this one.

Here is the family lineage for some context, starting with the closest generation:

Virginia Cook (1909 - 1958) born and died Lakewood, Ohio, USA (grandmother)

Byron Moon Cook - born 7/22/1872 Widder Station, Ontario, CAN; died 9/17/19 Lakewood, Ohio. Married to Minnie Mae Goodes

William M. Cook - born 10/1/1835 Great Sturton, Lincolnshire, ENG; died 11/22/1900 Ypsilanti, Michigan, USA. Married to Elizabeth Sarah Moon

Charles Cook - born 2/8/1793 Great Sturton, Lincolnshire, ENG; died 1883, Great Sturton, Lincolnshire, ENG. Married to Ann Ranyard

Thomas Cook - born before March 9, 1750 Mareham le Fen? Lincolnshire, ENG; died 1/19/1837 Great Sturton, Lincolnshire, ENG . Married to Mary Holding

Robert Cook - born 3/14/1725 Great Sturton, Lincolnshire, ENG; died 8/30/1775 Great Sturton, Lincolnshire, ENG. Married to Martha Ablewhite.

Thomas Cooke - born before 12/17/1693 Great Sturton, Lincolnshire ENG; died before 1/26/1763 Great Sturton, Lincolnshire, ENG. Married to Sarah Lamin?

Richard Cooke - speculative Great Sturton? Married to Margery Wilson - speculative

Many thanks!
