Kent Lookup Requests / Re: Christening of Robert Back [Wye area - possibly 1630s]
« on: Monday 11 April 22 21:09 BST (UK)  »
Following is a list of marriages relating to my grandfather, Wm. Beck (name change in USA) that I gleaned from the LDS Family Search website which may have some relevance.  I would appreciate further information on the Back and Court families of Kent, if possible.  Thanks,  Catamaran

Robert Back 1616  Catherine Court 1623 (m.1641):

Thomas Back 1659       Ann Saddleton 1665     m.1685
William Back 1691      Mary Ottoway 1691
William Back 1713   Margaret Holmes 1716
Thomas Back 1746     Hester Booth 1745             m. 1768
Edward Back 1775   Mary Ransome 1772
George Back 1816       Lydia Wilson 1819
Job Back 1855           Mary Jane Glazebrook 1860  m.1882)

Also wanted to add that Diana appears as "Dinah" sometimes on Family Search, and "Babette" may be Rosetta.

I think I can add other children to the list from the 1871 census.  Catherine, 24; Job 16 (my great-grandfather); Jesse 8; and a grandson, Arthur (Catherine and David Dray, from other research).

Ray B,

I was incorrect in my first posting.  The Backs emigrated from England to the US in 1895 when my grandfather (William) was 4 y.o.  The were sponsored by my great-grandmother's relative (a Glazebrook from Rodmell in Sussex).  Our last name was changed to Beck.  My great-grandfather was Kate's younger brother.  He worked as a victualer in the Half Moon Pub in Kent, and for some reason according to family lore, was thrown off the Constabulary before that.

Kate and her son, Arthur, are listed on the 1871 census as part of her parent's household, but Arthur is listed as 5 y.o. although he would have been born around that time so the record seems erroneous.  Her marriage banns to David Dray were posted that year, as well.

Thank you for info provided.

Just stumbled across this and had the same question.  My great-grandfather was Job Back (b.1854), who is Kate Back's brother.  My grandfather's family arrived in Philadelphia in the early 1900's.  Kate's child, Arthur, is listed with the Back family in the 1871 census in England.  The research leads me to believe that she then married David Dray and they had three children, but I can't account for the "British Subject, America" for Rose and George.
