Oh I should also say I have a DNA match with a relative who is the descendant of Dominick McLaughlin. On her tree she's identified the parents of Daniel as Daniel McLaughlin and Elizabeth Cummins but from my records that doesn't appear true but as I had no concrete evidence of the parents bring Charles McLaughlin and Mary O'Donovan I wasn't sure what to make of that. I've no evidence of a brother Dominick for Daniel but then again, I can't even find the parents.

Where did the 1896 marriage take place?
I have found the 2nd marriage, but not the first.

First marriage took place in Londonderry.

Hi all,

I've got quite the problem with my 2nd great grandfather, Daniel McLaughlin. I'm trying to find his parents and siblings but there's a discrepancy between records.

Daniel married Annie Jennings on 18 July 1896 They were both full age. His father is listed as Charles McLaughlin who was already deceased. Charles and Daniel were listed as Tradesman(?).

I then find Daniel and Annie in the Irish 1901 census at 29.1 Lecky Road, Londonderry with their 1 year old son Charles James McLaughlin (1900-1943). Daniel is listed as a Carpenter, aged 28.

The next time I find Daniel, he is living with the large family of his wife Annie Jennings with his children Charles, Elizabeth and Daniel. Annie died not long after the birth of their youngest child, Daniel, my direct ancestor.

Daniel marries again in 1918 aged 45 to Jane Malone who's reisdence was Belvidere hospital, I've never seen that as a place of residence before but it may be connected to her work as a Laundry Superintendant. His parents are listed here as Charles McLaughlin, a Farrier and Mary O'Donovan.

What makes me believe this is the right record is that in Daniel's death certificate, he is lised as the Widow of Annie Jennings and Jane Malone. but his parents are listed again as Charles McLaughlin and Mary Donovan. He is buried in St Peter's Dalbeth Cemetery.

I'm not sure what to make of this. Everything matches up besides the parents. I cant find a Daniel with the right parents around the right age when searching NIDirect but found his marriage no problem. I tried searching for Charles' death but I just dont have enough info to narrow it down

EDIT: just an edit as I completely forgot to post the discrepancy.

Derry (Londonderry) / Re: McLaughlins from Magilligan/Ballycarton area

"I think it's been explained to you before that you probably won't be able to find exactly which McLaughlin, if any, was the father of John Reid."

By the way, it's 2 yrs and 9 mos since this post, and I just wanted to let you know that I was successful in identifying the father of John Reid using dna, supported by a subsequent record search, once I knew who I was looking for. His name was Dominick McLaughlin (not his brother Daniel, as I first suspected) from Magilligan in Derry, Ireland. He came to Scotland in 1870 for work and there met my gr-gr-grandmother who was apparently making some pennies on the streets. Even she likely did not know who the father of her son was, but I do! Almost certainly he didn't know that he had a son, not to mention a gr-gr-granddaughter who would refuse to give up her quest to identify him. I've written a novel based on the life of this gr-gr-grandmother and her sons. Her story is alternated with chapters about the research which lead me to the answers to so many questions. I'm hoping to sell it to a publisher, but if that doesn't happen, I will self-publish. Look for it in bookstores, it is called "Green Among the Clovers" !!
Cheers!  ;D

The one I'm interested in Is the one around the gallowgate.  I always forget there were multiple

Then it's the one found by Monica - it first appears in the 1817 Directory of the City as M'Farlane Street and in various maps of the City as McFarlane Street and then MacFarlane Street

Fantastic! Thank you everybody for your help.

Which Macfarlane Street - at one point (around 1900 there were two listed in the Post Office Directories)

The first and oldest ran from the Gallowgate to Graeme Street in the east end and the second ran off of Balgraybank Street in the Springburn area.

By the mid 1920's there was a third which ran off of Vulcan Street (Port Dundas area)

Added McFarlane Street Port Dundas later became Broadford Street and McFarlane Street Springburn became Syriam Street

The one I'm interested in Is the one around the gallowgate.  I always forget there were multiple

Hello everybody, this is a long shot and just purely out of interest, but does anybody know the history behind the name of this street?

Agnes Craig is my great-great-great-great-grandmother (going down the female line, names are Marshall, Kirby, Lawson, Larkin, and so on).  I’m tracing back through the women of the family specifically, so also looking into Janet Crawford’s history and have run into the same issues (hence how I found this thread). OP not sure if there’s a way to contact each other through this but let me know if you want to connect to figure this out! Clearly we are related :)

Oh I'd love to connect and try to figure it out. You can private  message me on here if you would like or we could find an alternate thing if that suits you better. Whichever is easiest.

Until proven otherwise the lady has to be given the benefit of the doubt  :)

As Treetotal says one possibility is that the couple met up for a short time during his leave (official or otherwise) without any proof to either support or refute her claim regarding paternity the benefit of the doubt must apply.

I am inclined to believe her, she was well liked within the family im usually very skeptical, but in this case, i agree, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. it may also be that Ii'm misinterpreting the service record also.
