World War Two / Norwegian Campaign 1940 and my great uncle
« on: Saturday 09 December 23 12:52 GMT (UK)  »
I strongly suspect, on the basis of my DNA links to a Norwegian person, that his mother is actually the daughter of my British great uncle and not the Norwegian she thinks is her father.

I am wondering if there is any way my great uncle was able to meet and spend time with a Norwegian woman during WW2 and wonder if it could have happened during the Norwegian campaign when the RAF was involved in protecting Norway.

My great uncle was a class F reservist in the RAF during WW2. I have joined Forces War Records and am able to get his service number, class and when he first joined up. Is there any way of knowing where he was during WW2? I can’t find any thing more than the basics above.

Thanks for your detailed and helpful reply. I’m veering to 2nd cousin as they share ancestors on my grandmother’s maternal and paternal sides.

The Common Room / New My Heritage possible relationships feature issue
« on: Thursday 02 March 23 13:07 GMT (UK)  »
I share an ancestor with someone who according to the new 'possible relationships' feature is most likely to be my 2nd cousin. His son is, however, most likely to be the son of my 3rd cousin. I appreciate that what is most likely is not definitely the case, I'm just confused as to why the 'most likely' data doesn't match up for father and son.
Can anyone who has seen this new feature explain this. thanks

Thanks all. He was in Somerset, UK. Handwriting is from his son’s marriage cert in 1844.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Surprisingly strong DNA link with Norwegian.
« on: Sunday 04 September 22 16:45 BST (UK)  »
Thank you everyone for your replies. There is an additional mystery. I share this Norwegian’s DNA with a descendant of my great grandfather’s sister. She shares about 300 cm of DNA with him. This makes me think the shared ancestor of the 3 of us is her great grandparent and my great great grandfather parent. My gg grandparents moved from Somerset to Bristol which is a port city. The Norwegian has one ancestor of about the right age who was a sea captain.
So it seemed very likely to me that we are all descended from the Norwegian Sea captain.
However, there are some spanners in the works. My great grandfather and his sister were born about 8 years apart and other children were born in between. Would my great grandmother who was married really have gone back to the sea captain each time he visited, if indeed he did visit Bristol?
Also, although there appears to be a strong link to my Somerset ancestors via my maternal grandmother’s father, I and the Norwegian share many smaller dna links with my maternal grandmother’s mother’s ancestors in Cornwall.
Could it therefore be just an anomaly that I share more dna with the Norwegian than should be expected and actually he’s a more ancient Cornish link, or both?
Please excuse my convolution.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Surprisingly strong DNA link with Norwegian.
« on: Tuesday 16 August 22 16:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I have no known Norwegian links in my family tree. However I have many Norwegian and Swedish DNA matches.
I have been contacted by a Norwegian with Norwegian family tree asking me if I have Norwegian links.
We share 165.5 cm in 9 segments with the largest being 30.1 cm. This could make us about 2nd cousins which I can’t account for in my tree.
The only uncertain part of my tree is a Cornish illegitimate 4 times great grandfather, born about 1800. He was christened with the middle name Tonsson which sounds Scandinavian to me.
Is it possible that I could share this much DNA with someone who shares a 5 times great grandfather with me? Otherwise, I presume there is an illegitimate ancestor somewhere in our trees.

I have a new Ancestry match who I know shares a common Scottish ancestor with me. I would love to map her onto DNA Painter as she is the only person I’ve come across who I know matches me purely on that line.
I messaged her and mentioned how she could get a Gedmatch number, but didn’t want to be pushy so left it at that.
Is there any way I can transfer her Ancestry info so I can put it on DNA Painter?

Midlothian / Re: Emily Lyon born 1829 1831 Scotland

I have a theory in my mind that she could be the daughter of one of William and Margaret’s older 2 children and was brought up by grandparents as their own?
