Hello Wendy,

I descend from a cousin of William.

George Burnlees & Margaret Marshall had (with their names as per the OPRs):

George Brownlees (b.1775) m. Elizabeth Johnstone
Catharine Brownlees (b.1776)
Alexander Brownlees (b.1779)
John Brownlees (b.1781) m. Helen Haldane, d.1856
James Burnlees (b.1784) m. Isobel Currie
William Burnlees (b.1787)
Elizabeth Burnlees (b.1793) m. Peter Cairns, d.1873

Although I have not extensively researched this family, I'd be interested in adding a spouse / death date for William - especially if he moved to England. Ultimately I would like to create precise tree for the Brownlees of Greenlaw and I haven't previously found details for William.

Hi Wendy,

How about a marriage certificate? Does that link William to the 1787 William born in Greenlaw?

Wendy,

Whom did William b.1787 marry?

When did he move to England and do you have his death certificate confirming parentage?

Thanks,
Bethan

The Isabella Brown here (living at Mellerstain Mill) is Isabella Brownlees b1789 to Alexander Brownlees and Jean Forsyth.

She was a first cousin of the John Burnlees born to George Brownlees and Margaret Marshall. That John married Helen Haldane and died 1856 in Edinburgh. So whilst that's not your John, perhaps the Mellerstain link indicates a connection between the families.

There is a tree on Ancestry.co.uk called the Brownlees of Greenlaw (Descendants of George Brownlees and Margaret Marshall). Perhaps your John's father is somehow related to the George at the top of the tree. Contact the owner if you can extend the tree.

There are also a few Brownlies Brounlies in the index of this book.
