Galway / Trying to find a connection to my family via Patrick Laffey and his mother
« on: Thursday 02 April 20 22:49 BST (UK)  »
I'll try my best to keep this short and as simple as possible, but it's pretty complicated. My father grew up in NYC nearby relatives who were related to him via his mother's paternal side of the family. If my grandmother were still alive, I'm pretty sure she wouldn't know how exactly these people are related to use either.

Anyway, the furthest information I have is through Patrick Laffey, born around 1905 in Galway. He was the father of the family who lived in NYC near my father. Patrick's mother was Kathleen Kane, who is probably related to my father's family through his grandfather Philip Kane.

There are a couple major issues here, though.

Philip Kane's mother's surname was Kane as well as his father's, and Patrick Laffey's father married three times due to deaths in childbirth, so there's also the possibility that we could  be related through one of the other "mothers", and this Kathleen Kane just could have shared the surname with us without being related.

Based off of some info I was able to collect from my aunt, it is believed that Patrick Laffey is related to us through the maternal Kanes, which would be through Philip Kane's mother, Bridget Kane. She was born 1861 in Galway, and we only know of one sibling, John Kane (no dates known). However, it seems unlikely she only had one sibling, so we're thinking that maybe this Kathleen Kane could have been her sister? Anyway, Bridget Kane's parents were named Martin Kane and Winifred Faherty, but I don't have any definite birth or death dates, aside from "about 1818" for Martin's birth year.

(*) Laffey, (*) Laffey, and (*)Laffey. They were probably born in the mid to late 1940s, maybe the early 1950s. They were born in New York, and grew up in Elmhurst, Queens.

Their parents' names were Patrick Laffey and Mary (unknown maiden name). They were both born in Galway, Ireland.

They grew up nearby my father, and our family has lost touch with them. We're looking to find out how exactly they are related to us; those three people mentioned first are either his first or second cousins, and the mother was a relative on my father's maternal side.

Fife / Cameron and Wishart- looking for an 1856 grave from Kennoway
« on: Thursday 13 February 20 18:18 GMT (UK)  »
I need help finding the location

Peter Cameron and Margaret Wishart. They both died in Kennoway, Fife. Peter was born 1789 in Kinghorn, and died 1856 in Kennoway. Margaret was born 1787 in Kennoway, and died there in 1863.

I’ll be in Scotland in April and I already know the gravesites of my ancestors from Arbroath, but my family doesn’t have any info on this Fife branch.

Thomas Davis and Johanna Morris had a daughter Anne in 1864

Bit too old for your Anne with an age at marriage of 24 in 1897 so born c1873. Not that she is consistent with her age in the Census.

Where did you find her mother as Johanna Morris?

Does that say Johanna Walsh as Thomas Davis's wife?

Morris is the information from my grandma and her family

The son was from Roscrea Moyard.
Son on the privious death is Letterfrack.

There is a marriage in 1897 of an Anne Davis and Pat Faherty.

That's them! Well at teh very least, that confirms that Patrick's father's name was Thomas.

I don't have much information about my great-great grandmother Anne Faherty (maiden name Davis), but I know she died September 1958 in Galway, probably the Renvyle-Derryinver area.

Her husband was Patrick Faherty, and they had 6 kids

Kincardineshire / Re: Unusual brick wall - James Gordon and Elisabeth Duncan
« on: Friday 01 November 19 00:01 GMT (UK)  »

However, there is a late November 1798 birth/baptism in Fordoun, where only her father James is shown on the actual baptism record. Before clicking on buy/view, the parents' names are listed: James Duncan and Jean Brand.

Are you saying that they have indexed a baptism with a mother's name, but no such name appears on the original record?  Have you asked SP what is going on there?

Debra  :)

They said that assuming I have the same Elizabeth Duncan for both records, then the only possibility is that the informant made some sort of mistake regarding the mother.

"the informant was her son in law, David Mowat"

Could he have picked up the question of 'mother' wrong & given his own mother's name/maiden name?

I've often seen wrong info. on DCs where in-laws or g/children are the informants i.e. not unusual.

Annie

No, his mother was Margaret Stewart
