Could this be him in 1944:

Hull Daily Mail 1944

Assault on a Child
A sentence of six months with hard labour was placed on Edward Cliney, living at 55 Park St, Hull, when he appeared at the Hull Police Court yesterday, charged with indecently assaulting a girl of seven. He pleaded guilty.
Det-Sgt Green stated that Cliney had previous convictions and at present was on license from a term of imprisonment for a felony.
Do you mind me asking what database do you use to access newspaper reports such as this? Are you able to search for any more Edward Cliney articles?

That sentence in 1944 will definitely be him. As said originally, in Ancestry database there are plenty of records for both Edward and his father being imprisoned for various offences. So we know he was still alive in 1944 in Hull, but thereafter is still unknown.

There was a Garner-Emmett marriage in the London area in 1938 but it was clearly a different couple. It is most likely that the girl born in 1943 was from this marriage.

Could not find his birth on GRO in 1908. Could he have changed his name?  I did find a Garner birth in Watford with MMN Emmett, 1943 but may be a coincidence.
I’ll need to investigate that Watford link but I’d say it’s doubtful based on geography but it’s worth looking at. As for Edward changing his name, who knows? As I’ve said he and other members of the close family interchanged between “Cliney” and “Culliney”.

Rose Ann Garner died Beverley, 1989. When did she re marry? 1939 register has Garner (Cliney)

My post crossed with yours! I’ve not found a record for when Rose Ann married Mr Garner (tried Cliney, Culliney, Emmett but no joy). As said, her death was registered in Beverley.

June Marian Cliney was the daughter of Daniel Cliney (Edward’s younger brother) and Gladys Bradley, not Edward and Mary Ann.

Mary Ann’s death in 1989 was registered in Beverley under the name of “Garner” (DOB verified against the 1939 Register and on the death index record). However, I’ve not found out when Mary Ann remarried.

Edward Cliney was born in Hull on 16 Apr 1908, the eldest son of William Cliney (1887-1955) and Amy Pennington (1886-1916).

Edward married Rose Ann Emmett (1918-1989).

The last record I have of Edward is the 1939 Register of him and Rose living together in Hull.

I have had no luck in finding Edward’s death record. Searches have not been helped by the fact that he and some of his relatives often went by the name of “Culliney” rather than “Cliney”.

Edward (and his father) often fell foul of the law and they were clearly “interesting” characters.

Any help in tracking down what became of Edward after 1939 would be appreciated.

I researched Thomas' parents Elijah Wiggins and his wife Margaret and it turns out that Margaret's maiden name was Grogan, as per their marriage index record for Apr-Jun 1882 in Leeds. Thomas was born before his parents married and obviously chose to take his mother's maiden name, possibly because it seems Margaret had been deserted by Elijah (according to a reformatory school report for Thomas in 1894). Margaret also served short prison sentences in 1893/94 for being drunk and disorderly.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Thanks all for the suggestions that Thomas Grogan and Thomas Wiggins could be one and the same. It will be interesting to research. Other suggestions still welcome!
