That's an interesting explanation Bookbox.

In the meantime, I now think the grandmother's name was ENGRACIA, latin for Grace? This would make sense as I believe her english names were Mary GRACE.

Thank you very much Lewis. I really appreciate you helping me. I'm not aware where the maternal grandparents family came from. Perhaps the Dublin area, where Julia Tighe was born about 1824. Although I'm yet to find a baptism for her.

Thanks also to Bookbox for the correction and also suggesting the maternal grandmother's maiden name might begin with a K not an H. It's apparent the priest was spelling the names phonetically, so I agree this could be a derivative of Cody.

The paternal grandmother was Mary G Kirwan as far as other documents have stated, so I'm unsure where the name Engrana (I read it as Engravia) came from...

I will do some more investigating and post back here with my findings.

Hello everyone,
I have an original transcript of a Catholic baptism written in Latin. The information is for Maria Kerwan or Richards (father used his mothers maiden name as an alias) baptised in York Western Australia in 1859.

Is there anybody who is far more skillful than I, who could translate the entry for me please? I'm particularly interested in the maternal grandmother's maiden name of HODDY (I think), who I'm not finding in any of the Irish websites.

Thank you Wivenhoe, yes I have the same information. The witness on the marriage cert was also the witness on another marriage cert on the same day, which makes me think she might have been a "ring in" for want of a better expression.

My mistake Treespirit. I agree it is a long way away. Though if the tree is found to be correct (what a pity there are no sources!) then the siblings are born in various locations. I'd like to find the father Daniel's death/probate, which may solve a few mysteries. Looking...

I agree. I'd been looking at that couple's marriage for a while now:

BTW I believe Doodekraal was a farm in Tygerberg (presently in the Durbanville area) and bought by the De Villiers family in the late nineteenth century.

Thank you for the link. I have it as a possible. However it does not solve the problem of the maiden name of Susan's mother on the Marriage Cert. I originally posted. I guess Susannah Oosthuisen could have remarried after Daniel died and Susan (the daughter) has recorded the 2nd married name of her mother?

Not that I have found yet JM. I'm not finding any passenger lists for De Villiers (and variants) which mention her or her parents.

When you look at the letter "R" in Rite of the Roman Catholic Church, they're quite different. Now looking closer at the "N" in North Wonthaggi, I don't think it's that either.

There was a "Missing Friends" notice put in a Tasmanian Newspaper in 1924 where Susan is looking for her aunt Mrs M Stordeur. She and her husband Adolphe Otto Stordeur were teachers. Her Aunt's maiden name was Oosthuisen, which SHOULD make Susan Blake's mother an Oosthuisen. I'm definitely not seeing that surname on the Marriage cert.
