Cornwall Lookup Requests / Re: James Oliver brn 1833 Sithney
« on: Tuesday 15 July 25 20:15 BST (UK)  »
Thanks everyone, especially CaroleW,  I will check and add all the information to my tree.
I guess JAMES OLIVER doesn’t want to be found, I am on Ancestry but not with a newspaper or world wide subscription, maybe he was imprisoned due to him being made bankrupt in 1882 or emigrated aboard, or he was not dead by 1891 and that his wife, Amelia who stated in the 1891 census that she was a WIDOW, LIED. Who knows.
Thanks All

Thanks CaroleW and Ladyhawke for your inputs into my query.
So I can assume that the William James Oliver who was in the 1891 as a student at Reedham School and listed as born in Helston Cornwall, died in February 1892 and was buried on 22 February at St John’s Coulsdon, which is next door to Reedham School.
Thank you everyone.

Regarding CaroleW’s question re Amelia Oliver, she remarried in 1894 to my g/grandfather John Joseph Moyses Stephens in Falmouth Cornwall.

I have still the problem of what happened to William James father, the fact that William was in a children’s home 200 miles away from his mother is puzzling, the requirement for admission at Reedham School was that the child must be father less and destitute.

I’ll keep digging, thanks again.

Thanks Neale1961, I have emailed the Reedham School to see if they have any records on William or his parents, It’s a long way from South West Cornwall to Croydon, but anything is possible and the ages all fit in perfectly.

Thanks for your help

Cornwall Lookup Requests / James Oliver brn 1833 Sithney

Hi All
I am trying to find what happened to James Oliver after 1881. At this time on the census he is living with his wife Amelia and son William J in Meneage Street, Helston.

James Oliver Head Age 47 Master Cabinet Maker brn Sithney
Amelia Oliver Wife Age 30 brn Scotland
William J Oliver Son Age 8mths brn Helston

In the 1891 census Amelia his wife is located in the Falmouth Orphanage as below

Amelia Oliver WIDOW Age 40 Matron brn Arbroath Scotland

I can find no death or census entries for JAMES after the 1881 census, however I have found that JAMES was a bankrupt in 1882, this is where his story appears to end. His son William J also appears to go missing from any further censuses etc.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated

Thanks

Thanks again amondg, very interesting newspaper articles and they all fit in with the time scale, poor Rose looks like she was only 1 when she died. I am unable to find any trace of Alfred George Buckingham, maybe he just left the family to look after themselves, certainly it was a hard life for this family at that time, I’m still digging around, any more info I gather I will post
Thanks

Thanks for the further info amondg, unfortunately I don’t have the marriage cert of Alfred & Jane Smith, I know that Jane was born in Battersea, but not pinned her down yet. Interesting about Rose’s death in Houghton Regis, thats next to Toddington and the age is correct.
Thanks

Thank you to both Amondg & AlanBoyd the info given helps a great deal, I am researching the Buckingham family of Elizabeth Maud Buckingham ( Hucklesby ), a descendant of Elizabeth Maud tells me family stories mention that their was a connection between either George Hucklesby or Elizabeth Maud and a Romany Gypsy line, I’ve found nothing to prove this yet. Hucklesby & Buckingham are not Romany Gypsy surnames.
Thanks for your help.
