Hi Val

You have a descendent of William Sawyer and of the Honeys of Sunningwell who lives in Victoria.   I know she has done lots of research on the subject and I suggest you contact her.

For security I have sent you her email address in a message on Genes Reunited.

Good luck

Colin

Hi Trish

On marriage cert for William(b 1818) he is a blacksmith and his father, William Eyre, is deceased.

According to a LDS member's submission, William lived in 6 Church St., Sandford, Oxon on 6th June 1841 and was a labourer, and in 1844 was a blacksmith.

The mother of children for William and Martha would have to be Martha.   The Sawyer baptisms in Freebmd for Abingdon are promising as Sandford is in this registration district, as is Bayworth.

Cheers

Colin

Hi Val

I have made several attempts to trace William Sawyer so I am interested in your comments, but some of them confuse me.  [They also appear on a CD of LDS church member submissions]

Bayworth is a cluster of houses down the road from Sunningwell.   The local church is St.  Leonards Sunningwell.   I have the Sunningwell parish register on microfiche, there is a baptism for Martha Honey but there is no entry for William Sawyer(or Eyre) in 1817, 1818 or 1819.   Birth certificates did not come into use until 1837.

I have looked again at William and Martha's marriage certificate.   The name Honey is very clearly written as Honey and could not be confused for Hincy, and the name Hincy does not appear anywhere on the certificate.

I hope these comments prove useful

Hi Val

I can give you no good news on William Sawyer.   I have seen a lot of correspondence from paid researchers who were unsuccessful.

One of the few known facts is his marriage - I have a copy of the certificate.   It is also known he sailed to Aus. in Feb 1844 on the Wallace and at this time he and Martha were both 26.

Much of the other information in circulation could be misleading because it seems to have been generated by a church member and no information on sources is given.   It is unlikely that he was from Bayworth, because if he were, information on his parents would have been readily available - somewhere in the City of Oxford seems the most likely.   His mother could have been Jane if she were living with him at the 1841 census - you could check this.

I presume you have Martha's family back to the marriage of William and Elizabeth Clemences in 1650.   William was baptized 24 Dec 1626 and his parents were Edward Hony and Barbara ?.

I hope some of this is useful

Best wishes

Berkshire / Parents of Alce Honey of Sunningwell
« on: Tuesday 31 March 09 01:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Alce was baptized in Sunningwell in 1619 with father Edward.

Also in the Sunningwell Parish Register are burials for Edward Hunny in 1668 at almost one hundred and Barbara Hunney in 1675 as a widow of over 80.

My hypothesis is that Edward and Barbara are Alce's parents.   Has anybody else reached this conclusion or have an opinion?

I am still searching for the birthplace of Edward, and now Barbara.  Neither appears as being baptized in Sunningwell.   Also, they were not married in Sunningwell.   Please, does anyone have a marriage for them?

With thanks

Colin

Wiltshire / Re: Wilton - non conformist chapels

Hi Glen

There were probably several non-conformist chapels in Wilton.

Several of my ancestors were baptized in Crow Lane Independent.   Baptismal  register is available on IGI for 1763 to 1836.   Unortunately there are no entries for Ford.

There is a marriage of Dorcas Ford to James Morris 27 July 1831 in St. Marys.

Best wishes

Thanks Sue,

They are all useful because I a sure they are all descendents of Edward, and I have a longer term objective of demonstrating how Edward populated Oxon and Berks  with Honeys.   Towns and villages with his descendents include Lambourne, Warborough, Benson and Reading.

You are right about the spelling, in 1620 the spelling was Honye.

Once again, thank you for your help.

Best wishes

Many thanks Sue, all help welcome.

I have looked at many Oxfordshire and Berkshire parishes on film, often unreadable, from LDS but there are still many gaps.

Cheers

Hi Treefan
Good to hear from you.   I think you are uptodate with current information.   Marriages at the time of Robert have faded to the point of disappearing.   My line also passes through Robert and then went through the parishes of Appleford and Shillingford, would be interested in your line.

I keep searching for Edward, I know his baptism is not in the Sunningwell register.   I have seen an entry in the Bishops Transcripts for the marriage of Edward Honye of Newbury, but I have since seen a published transcription giving Edward Lonye of Newbury.   In the new year I shall borrow the parish register for the 5th time to check this out.   I have recently had a communication on Friends Reunited quoting another subscriber giving his birth as Sunninghill.   I have not checked this out yet.

Happy Christmas

Colin Honey
