Hello,
Thanks for your message. Yes, I have the Moray book of monuments for the Kirkmichael cemetery, which includes the inscriptions of each of the monuments and a map showing the placement of all the monuments. I also have photos of the markers of 'my' Grant connections. Are you related to this family? Thanks again. Anita

Hi, Daisy,

I just couldn't make out the word, "scandal" in the original text. Between having read many "straight forward" OPRs and my own R.C. upbringing, I don't think it would be a difficult task to come up with qualifying circumstances for a "scandal" list.   :o

Thanks very much for the reference link. It looks very helpful, and I'm sure I will be using it!   :)

Hello, Daisy, and thank you so much!

I got Knock frank out of the record, but when I tried to look it up, came up empty handed. I thought it perhaps had changed names or perhaps no longer existed.

What a great map!  Thank you!  I notice the map is titled Map of Murray. Is that the same as Moray?  I did look up the Woods - I didn't realize it was so close to Grantown.
Also, a very pretty area.

I agree the parents were "under scandal" - now that you've made it recognizable!  ???   :)

All questions answered. Thank you very much, Daisy!

Hi, Deebel,
Thanks very much for taking the time to respond to my request. Unfortunately, the Cuthbert you refer to is Cuthbert Grant aka "Warden of the Plains", son of Cuthbert Grant Sr. and an unnamed Canadian/Indian woman; the Cuthbert I am looking for was born in Scotland, the son of John Grant in Inverlochie (near Tomintoul) and Margaret Cumming.  Fur trade historian, Wallace, once said there were more Scottish Grants named Cuthbert in Canada than in Scotland!  They've been confused many times in the past! Thanks again!

Hello & thanks for your replies candrjm and conahey calling.

Yes, it was Cromdale & Inverallan and from the OPRs.

The entry states at the end the child was presented by Duncan Grant because the parents being under ??.
Does anyone have an idea what that was?

Thanks, again.

Hello. I'm having trouble reading the following Baptism. Can someone please clarify the missing and illegible words in italics? Thanks in advance!l

The index reads, 10/14/1735; William Coban; Grant/ James/ Coban  or Cumine and Beatrice Grant

Cabon - To James Coban alias Cumine & Beatrice Grant born ill was Bapnt in t. this 10 April & presented by Duncan Grant in Knock [illegible] the parents being under [illegible]

Would Cumine be the same as Cumming?
The index says the child's name is William, but I'm not seeing that in the actual register? could this be an error, then?

Thanks very much for your reply, Colin. You do have the correct date of birth and parents. I think the Cuthbert, dying 1875 can be ruled out simply by his age - he would have been 112 years old.

If the father was Donald that's definitely not him.

Lamchoil's also been ruled out.

Aberdeen could be a possibility, but the only way I would be able to tell would be by finding info on him from the years 1793 until 1805 when he was in Canada. I don't think he could be in two places at the same time. Perhaps he's noted in records from that area. Do you know anything about him?  I can check. Maybe he left me a letter.     ::)
Thanks for your leads, Colin!

The Common Room / 1788, Sotland): Farmer & Son (a Drover) Sequestered. Questions
« on: Wednesday 04 September 19 00:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I'm new on the block & am looking for a few answers to my burning questions from anyone able and willing to help.

"John Grant in Inverlochie" was a farmer in Inverlochy; his son, Cuthbert, was a drover at the same place. Both owed large sums of money - about 2oo pounds each. I believe charges were laid by individuals to whom they owed the money. John Grant was imprisoned at Banff until his "hearing" (for lack of the proper word) at someone's home. He was found guilty. I don't know what happened to him or his family after that. His known siblings were born between 1711 and 1731; he died in September, 1791, so in '88 he may have in his 70s . I'm uncertain where he died and is buried.

According to the documents I have, when sequestered, the individual has three choices: pay the debt; go to jail; run for fear of bodily harm.

Cuthbert Grant was charged but I'm unsure if he was found not guilty of the charges, or whether he wasn't 'punished' because he chose option 3 and left to join the Canadian fur trade where he became known as Cuthbert Grant of Trois-Rivieres. Cuthbert was born 1763;  The last reference I have for him is about 1805. I've been unable to find a marriage or death record for him.

My questions are:
Jonh may once have been a tackman. He probably leased the land. Given his advancing age, what would have happened to John and his property, if he didn't have children to take him in?  . Was there anything like a statute of limitations for someone like Cuthbert who 'skipped out' to avoid their sequestration? What would happen to his property? Could Cuthbert have returned to Scotland? What would have happened to him?   ??? ??? ???

In advance, thanks for your wisdom! :)

To all the contributors of this info, thank you. I'm a newbie and came across this topic by chance. I have been trying to figure out some of the same issues with our Grants of Inverlochy (near Tomintoul) from roughly 1675-1800 . You have been very helpful! ;D
