« on: Wednesday 23 April 25 19:15 BST (UK)  »
The death cert. for Donald McLeod 1898 in Dunoon, Steward, widower of Elizabeth, 80 years, parents Donald McLeod farmer, and Jane (might be Ann not Jane) McLeod no MS, and witness son-in-law Otto Lorenz.  Agnes McLeod married Otto Lorenz in 1887 in Blythwood.

In 1841 Kincardine, Ross-shire Oape this is what I think.  MCLEOD Cathrine 63 Out of County; MCLEOD John 31 Ag. Lab Out of County; MCLEOD Donald 27 Out of County - probably from Sutherland.
In 1851 Lanarkshire, Glasgow.  MACLEOD Daniel 41, No Trade Bred A Waiter,   Sutherland (or Ross and Cromarty), Bonar Bridge; MACLEOD Elizabeth Armour, Wife, 28, Born Overseas North America; MACLEOD John, Son, 5; MACLEOD Robert, Son, 3; MACLEOD Elizabeth,   Dau, 11m; all Glasgow
ARMOUR Jane,   Sislaw, 26, Servant, Born Overseas North America, Deaf; ARMOUR Mary, Sislaw, 13, Scholar, Glasgow;
In 1881 St. Rollox, Lanarkshire.  Donald McLeod 67, Steward (ship's), Ross&Cromarty; Elizabeth 50, wife; Agnes, dau, 24, Glasgow; Maggie, dau, 22, Glasgow; Geogina Young, 3, g-dau, Ayr;

Lanarkshire / Daniel or Donald McLeod and Elizabeth or Elisabeth Armour

There is a fairly good family tree for this family on familysearch.org, Daniel McLeod person ID 9QMR-RXC and Donald Mcleod person ID GZFT-T5P.

There are a few loose ends.  I am not sure about the location of Daniel or Duncan or Donald McLeod's birth between 1814-1817.  Or if the death given in Dunoon in 1898 is actually the right person.

The 1881 census shows that Donald McLeod is 67 born in Ross-shire and Elizabeth McLeod is 50 born in United States.  The 1851 census shows Daniel MacLeod aged 41 born in Sutherland (Ross & Cromarty), Bonar Bridge.  Elizabeth Armour MacLeod aged 28 born in British North America, sister-in-law Jane Armour aged 26 also born in North America, and sister-in-law Mary Armour aged 13 born in Lanarkshire, Glasgow, her familysearch.org ID 9QZ1-Y61.  In 1841 I believe this family, excluding Elizabeth, might be Wm Amour aged 30 and Louisa Thomson aged 25 Out-of-County.  Elizabeth McLeod's death in 13 Dec 1890 in Partick seems unlikely as the mother's surname is Mitchell.  Donald McLeod death on 10 May 1898 in Dunoon, Argyll also seems strange, no mother's surname given.

Before I waste more credits on Scotland's People I was wondering if anyone can narrow things down a little more.  I am specifically looking for Daniel or Donald or Duncan's parent (Duncan's would likely be John MacLeod and Helen MacKenzie in 1814).  Elizabeth's parents I am not sure about but I am more interested in the McLeods.  I really don't understand a Cabinet maker being in British North America and returning.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: One son is Hugh MacDonald 1845-1916 and I am also a bit confused about his wife's Anne Matheson's 1844-1915 parents Angus Matheson and Ann Matheson, possible duplicates and overlapping MacDonald families.  Kiltearn, ROC and Kilmorack, INV.  This still needs work.

I have sorted out the ambiguity.  There were two Hugh MacDonalds born around the same time i.e. 1845.  Hugh MacDonald of Kilmorack married Ann Matheson of Killearnan in 1870.  Father was William MacDonald and mother Isabella Chisholm.  Hugh and Annie had a family by 1881 and all lived in Kilmorack.  The other Hugh MacDonald of Kiltearn by 1881 still lived with his parents William MacDonald and Annie McLeod in Dingwall.

Thanks.  Death is in Dingwall.  William McDonald, Innkeeper, is married to Ann McLeod.  His parents William McDonald and Christina McNeil.  Informant is son Hugh McDonald.  I have found William and Christina in any census, yet.

I found this couple with family in the 1881 census living in Dingwall, ROC.  I believe Ann McLeod was born 21 May 1822 in Upper Docharty, Dingwall, ROC she seems to have died  27 Oct 1906, Bailechaul Inn Dingwall.  I have her both her parents names Murdo McLeod (1786-1880) and Christina McKenzie (1790- bef. 1880).  Her McLeod grandparents names are Hugh McLeod (I've speculated his parents John McLeod and Elizabeth Henry but have no proof)  and his wife was Ann McDonald.  Her husband William MacDonald is giving me greater problems, he appears to be in 1891 census in Dingwall but not later.  William MacDonald's parents names would help greatly and I haven't found his death date or location.

One son is Hugh MacDonald 1845-1916 and I am also a bit confused about his wife's Anne Matheson's 1844-1915 parents Angus Matheson and Ann Matheson, possible duplicates and overlapping MacDonald families.  Kiltearn, ROC and Kilmorack, INV.  This still needs work.

Any help would be appreciated.

The relationship, this is my cousins family and I was keen to resolve the ambiguities since my own family comes from Easter Ross.

Gadget, I also scanned and it contains a lot of detail.  I wasn't aware that the McLeods of Coigach came from Assynt.  I thought it more likely they came from the islands, like Tanera, to the mainland.

That makes sense as the parents did not move.  The reference for Norman was given Polglass 71-54  and familysearch.org ID: LY2Q-LGQ.  I didn't realize you had written a booklet about the Culnacraig McLeods.  https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-1550513346/view

Gadget, do you agree with my post about Norman McLeod Frasser, who maybe isn't a Frasser at all?

Also claimed by Chile seems to be Norman McLeod.
Polglass 71-54  and LY2Q-LGQ
Parents Hugh McLeod and Ann McLeod (Ann's maiden surname was also McLeod)

This person Norman Mac Leod Frasser is given as having wife Annabella Frasser and that may be the case as I didn't lookup the birth certificate.  He married  Maria Moira in Chile.

When Norman Mac Leod Frasser was born on 24 January 1862, in Lochbroom, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland, United Kingdom, his father, Hugh Macleod, was 51 and his mother, Annabella Frasser, was 41. He had at least 1 son and 2 daughters with Maria Mora. He lived in Los Álamos, Arauco, Chile in 1899. In 1897, at the age of 35, his occupation is listed as minero in Los Álamos, Arauco, Chile.

Unfortunately, we have two Hugh and Ann McLeods.  Hugh McLeod died in 1856 so the other Hugh is the father of Norman McLeod.  Ann McLeod his wife seems to be the daughter of Murdoch McLeod and Margaret Munro.  Murdoch is found in Culnacraig, Coigach in the 1841 census.  I left a note on the familysearch.org site.
