It's been so long since I made that post that I can't remember where I got the information from. It was most likely from a paysite that I was a member of at the time. I'm not so active on the family history quest at the moment.

In any event, the info I posted should be sufficient for you to apply for a copy from the NAI. There is an application form at that link address and it would not be expensive to get get a copy of both.

Good luck

Ireland / Re: CoastGuards/HM Customs Officers

The Coast Guard service was also a reserve force for the Royal Navy. Many, if not all of its members were formerly full-time members of the Navy and had probably originally enlisted as boys. As members of the Coast Guard they would also have been assigned to a Royal Navy ship stationed in a nearby port.

If you have an ancestor in the Coast Guard it would be well worth your time doing an online search with the National Archives in Kew.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/military/navy/rnstep1.htm

If you find him, then you can download a copy of his naval record for a small fee. This record will also give you a physical description of the man including any scars or tattoos etc.

The Common Room / Re: Death of RootsChatter: 'Christopher'
« on: Tuesday 02 June 09 10:08 BST (UK)  »
I too had the pleasure if meeting Christopher at the "Rootschat Meets" in Dublin.

These occasions were not as grand as their title might imply as the contingency plan for more attendees than expected was to pull over a second table. But as a consequence our meetings became more of a conversation between like-minded friends and in the centre of us all sat Christopher.

He was so familiar to each of us, his online persona being no different to the real thing. Quiet spoken, quick to smile, always encouraging and behind his eyes his mind was constantly whirring, searching for the connection between the information we were looking for and the place were it might be found. On matters of Irish genealogy he was a living breathing "Cyndi's List".

Countless Rootschatters have been and will continue to be assisted by his many valuable posts and these will stand as a monument to his memory.

Truly a Gentleman and a Scholar.

Tipperary / Re: More recent relatives in Tipperary

Hello,

You should apply for the birth cert of either your grandfather or Pearl and details of how to do this and an application form can be found here:

www.gro.ie

This is what they say:

You can apply in writing, by fax or in person giving as many details of the birth, death or marriage as you can, i.e. full names, date and location of event, parent's names and occupations, mother's maiden names etc. Obviously the more information you can give us the more chance we have of finding the records you are looking for. Our index and records are date based and are in a manual format so we will need accurate dates (correct year at least).
The absolute minimum information we need is the forename and surname (of both parties if it's a marriage) and the year the event occurred.

Good luck in your research

Westy,

There are census records available online, some for free and others you have to pay for.

What counties or areas are you interested in?

Dublin / Birth certificate query

Jean,

For any BMD certificate since 1864, you can apply to the General Register Office.

www.gro.ie

This is what they have to say:

You can apply in writing, by fax or in person giving as many details of the birth, death or marriage as you can, i.e. full names, date and location of event, parent's names and occupations, mother's maiden names etc. Obviously the more information you can give us the more chance we have of finding the records you are looking for. Dublin / Re: Archive wills, just need lookups to order
« on: Monday 25 August 08 17:54 BST (UK)  »
Katie,

I had a look on Originsnetwork.com as they have an index of Irish wills 1484-1858.

There are ten references to Disney wills (some mentioned twice, date of will, date of grant etc.) but all are males and none are Henry.

I'm not certain that this index is comprehensive. Perhaps another Rootschatter could enlighten us all.

I would be interested in looking at some other family wills that are included in this index. Does anyone have any experience of searching for and reading wills?

Debra,

You might also consider Borrisokane.

Griffiths Valuation has a record of one Patrick Costello(e) living in the townland of Rathmore in the parish of Borrisokane, so there were certainly Costellos in the area.
