I still have Master Clegg's embossed leather passport holder and two books of his here in front of me, tucked safely into a large plastic Ziplok bag. I am trying to insert photos of them into this reply, but without much success - I will keep at it, though, and I will certainly hold onto them. Wish me luck, I will figure this "insert image" thing out eventually .This is all I get for now:

Way down in this thread is a W.O.Clegg in the New York City census of 1870, age 34, born in England, and residing in the borough of Brooklyn - must be him, explaining(?) his papers being found there

Smaller than you can imagine - I was born and grew up not ten blocks from Master Clegg's Manhattan address! A private investigator of my acquaintance found the booklet in an apartment in Sunset Park in Brooklyn, just over the Brooklyn Bridge from Lower Manhattan where W.O. Clegg lived in 1865. I have no idea how or why it was there after 150 years. The PI knows I am fascinated by old things, and asked if I could research the passport's owner. If you would like, I can send you the actual passport (probably expired, though) and some other old items found along with it. At any rate, I will try sending some photos of the booklet to this website.
  Best Wishes, John

I was recently shown a leather passport holder with the name Walter Orrell Clegg embossed on the cover. The gentleman travelled from London to Paris from 1855 to 1858. I Googled the name Walter Orrell Clegg, and found a naturalization form filed by him in New York City in 1865. At the time, he lived at 296 Madison Street (not Madison Avenue) in Manhattan.Hope you find this information of interest - Best Wishes, John
